Corydoras Favoured Substrate

What is it. I am getting some foul white gravel out the tank tomorrow and want to replace with a cory friendly substrate. One that will not look dirty to fast.
 
suggestions please and thanks in advance.
 
P.S    - What would be your favoured corys for a little 54 litre tank ? only other fish will be a few male guppies and later cherry shrimp and perhaps a couple of assasins.

Sand every time, they love it, they sift it through their gills getting particles of food.

Definitely some sort of sand; I use children's play sand in my tanks.
 
For a tank that small, you're really looking at one of the three 'dwarf' corydoras species; Corydoras hastatus, C. habrosus or C. pymaeus or possibly pandas; all other cory species get too big for you to be able to have a proper sized group (that means at least six.

If you can get silica sand that would be good, or play sand, the kind used in children's sand pit

Your second link to the Milky Way is a finer sand, however it is still very pale if you are having issues keeping it from looking dirty

thanks. All been taken out of my hands. Mothering law showed up with 6 litres of "milky way" stuff. Say 0.2 - 1 mm ???  unsure what a cory will think of that but no worries. Be a while before i get em anyway.
