I know that Cory's need/like smooth and soft substrate to live in/on and was wondering if the substrate in the picture would be ok for the Cory's.

If the gravel is sharp it will wear away their barbels & cause infection.
Rub the gravel between your fingers to see how sharp it is to check, corys do better on sand tbh.
How big is your tank? It doesn't look like it has a large enough footprint for corys

The tank at the minute is 40 litres but in 2 weeks everything will be moved over to my 70 litre fish tank so I hope that that tank is big enough as I really did not like the look of any Cory's when I first saw them but they have grow on me and I like the Pygmy and panda Cory's so which one is better for beginners to Cory's to start out with but I have had fish for 14 years from Tom

Agree with fishman, though I keep them on different kinds of substrate.
BTW A Krib (Talibancichlid to me) in a 40 litre ?????? Don''t know if the combi with those and Corys are a good combination (defo not in a 40L)
