can coral sand be used in tropical and coldwater tanks or only saltwater?

You can use coral sand in brackish or freshwater tanks; indeed, in some situations it is recommended. However, coral sand will push the carbonate hardness up, and that in turn raises pH. If you have hard water fish (like livebearers or Rift Valley cichlids) then that's exactly what you want, so no problem. If you're keeping soft water fish like most tetras and barbs, then that would be a disaster.

Cheers, Neale

+1 It has an application in fresh water tanks but only for certain fish. However, if you like sand there are other types you can use in FW that don't do what Neale is talking about.
