Common Betta Myths

That they can live off of plant roots.

They don't need a heater. Room temperature is fine.

Depends on room temperature- my room temperature is about 24C- the same temperature my heaters are set at.

cutting there fins is good for them and makes them more valuable

Fin trimming isn't nessecarily bad- I've used it with things like bad cases of finrot or chronic tailbiting. It can work wonders if you do it right- not too much stress and healthy regrowth afterwards.

-That their other name is not siamese fighting fish but chinese/japanese fighting fish.

Not strictly a myth- if I recall, their Thai name is something like pla'kat cheen (can't spell in Thai), or Chinese Biting Fish.

Here's a few that I've overheard at a LPS

-Oh no, they don't like to live in a larger bowl (than we keep them in) it makes them very insecure.
-in the wild they live in little muddy puddles, so shallow they flop around on their sides!!!???
-no it's not good to change the water too often, because they live in puddles.....in fact my betta at home get a water change when the water gets "skunky"
-sure you can put them in a community tank..but only one
-guppies make the best tankmates

Where's the Betta SPCA Police Investigators when u need them???

Some people think they are ugly!!!!!

Well thats not a myth, someone is always gonna think something is UGLY!

Sorry for like destroying the point of your point,

(i will make it up to you now) THEY ARE SO WRONG!!!!!

I was in walmart once and there was this couple looking at bettas, they were talking to the lady who worked there, and she was saying how she'd recommend a male, because the females are so ugly

here's something you can add to your site, not a myth though...

Bettas were originally bred for their fighting strains, now they are bred to have long, flowing fins although the fighting strain still persists, 2 male Bettas can be kept together in a tank with adequate space... ie. 2 can live peacfully ina 55gallon tank, depending on the violent nature of the betta... However this is not advised as the fighting strain still is existant.

And don't anybody say that it's not true, I got that info from a tropical fish magazine where the author clearly states that he has seen 2 male bettas living fine together in a 20gallon tank, however it is not advised... The magazine is Tropical Fish Hobbyist, auguest 2006 issue, page 16, section freshwater Q&A.

We were flicking through a Betta book in a fish store recently, and that book said that it is possible to keep two males together when they eventually get used to each other.

Yes but they don't have as much space and cannot get away if the other wants to do a big chase. It is also stressful.

Yeah, exactly. It's possible to put your head in a crocodiles mouth and not get it bitten off, but I wouldn't advise it :p
