Clove Oil

Clove oil has always been what I use to euthanize(?) I use it for the same reason mike os stated. Findings show it is very similar to using MS222.

Cheers guys and gals no need to worry though as i wasnt going to put any of my fish through it (plus all my fish are healthy) it was just a case of hearing about clove oil alot and noticing it for sale in a local chemists recently. :good:
Clove oil is not something i would use personally i would either freeze or decapitate a fish to put it out of its misery.
All youre answers were very helpful and informative thank you. :good:

i had to do the nasty deed last week to a fish, there was a very good debate on euthanasia in the betta forum because of this.

in the end i used ice cold water to sedate the fish, and vodka to kill it its all i had available but had an immediate effect within a few seconds there was no gill movement. so i dont know if it was the ice water that did it, the vodka or a mix of both.(they were added straight after the other)

i could never do as some suggested though and hit the fish with a brick, squish its head or whack it on something. i just couldnt do that :(

I have eaten fish several times in Indonesia where they had its body battered leaving the head uncovered whilst still alive then deep fried and served whilst the eyes where still moving and there was gill movement probably due to the brain still being active. Very cruel I know but you can't get much fresher then having it served cooked but still technically alive.

I would therefore be apprehensive of using the deep freeze method as if fish can "survive" for short periods in extreme heat then there is a chance they would survive extreme cold of ice water and it doesn't surprise me that cold water fish can survive an ice bath afterall look at an English pond in the winter... even with the rapid temperature difference it will just cause severe stress. Personally I would use clove oil to anethesise the fish then sever the spinal cord in my opinion it would it would cause the least amount of pain and the most rapid death.

if you research this you will find that the frozen water method has been tried and tested by laboritories and animal welfare societies and is found to be 100% humane - FOR tropical fish only NOT cold water fishies
the method i am on about is not the one where you put the fish in the freezer but the one where you put a container of water in the freezer until there is a solid lump of ice on top , you then break that ice and place the fish in the water
Having done this i know that the fish stops moving immiediately after being put in the water - there was no gill movement at all
i left the fish there for 10 mins just in case but it never moved again
