Cleaning

Hi all
I am looking for some reassurance here, while talking with a friend who keeps Koi we got on to the subject of cleaning, I mentioned that I put tank decorations in a weak solution of Milton sterilising fluid before scrubbing up and removing any algae that may be there, he sugested using Potasium Permanganate which can be obtained from the chemist and will remove any discolouration with ease.
Does anyone else use this?

I've never used anything when doing this. I found that boiling water and a scrubbing brush works well.

I agree with Too Fast; very hot water works as well as anything.
Potassium permanganate is dodgy stuff anyway; we used to use it years and years ago when we had very few specific aquarium products, but there are better, safer things nowadays.
Last time my mum got some (about 15 years ago now) she had to sign a poisons book!
I'd stick with plain hot water personally.

I use hot water too, one a fortnight all the decor is removed and left in a bucket of hot water while I gravel vac etc, then scrubbed with a toothbrush.

yeah i wouldn't want to brush my teeth with anything thats been scrubbing on my tank!!!!

Same here, and old toothbrush and my course brush (For cleaning larger stones in tank only)are invaluable. I only use hot tap water and plenty of elbow grease. I wouldn't tempt fate by using anything else.
