Cleaning Sand

I want to use Sand in my tank, and behind my house there is an old dry riverbed. I was wondering it I could use sand from there? If so, how do I clean it??? I know I have to strain out big particles first, but after that, what do I do? Soak in hot water or???

al i did for my sand was get a few buckets woos it around in hot/cold water and then poor away wait until the water runs clean and then gd to go , do you know if the river bed is fresh water or salt water i don't know if all rivers around the world are fresh or not if so no problem on that front

but hot or cold dosnt really matter i don't think although hot will kill anything trying to liv in it so maybe a plus to use hot

I believe it's fresh, it's only really wet when the rain gets bad, used to be a river before they damned it up a while ago

I cleaned my sand using old pillow cases in the bath. It took awhile but got a good result.
