I'm a teacher and I have a 10 gallon fish tank in my classroom with a betta. This weekend they will be bombing for fleas. I was reading through a few forums and people said that they made their tank air tight with garbage bags so I was going to use plastic wrap on the top then cover it again with a taped down garbage bag.

Now my question is, would I be able to leave this all taped up and airtight over the weekend or would the fish suffocate?? Unfortunately we aren't able to come in until Monday. There are 3 live plants in the tank, will that help?

I would put the fish in a smaller tank and take him home, except he just got here a week ago (before I found out about the flea bomb) and they will be doing this for the next 3 weekends so I'm worried that it would just end up stressing him out and killing him anyways.

Any ideas??

Thank you so much.

If the tank just has a betta, I would remove it and bring it back after the bug bombs are done, particularly since it will be happening repeatedly. Daily water changes in a small container would be less risk than having a fish locked up with toxins in the air and no way to check on it for days. Activated carbon would help remove any toxins that got into the tank but might not be enough if they're really smothering the place.

Your best option is to take him home with you until they have completely finished, but leave it for a couple of weeks before returning him to the classroom to make sure all toxins have gone (what is safe for humans may not be safe for him). So long as you take as much of his water as possible when you move him he should be fine.

This is also a little off topic, but I would like to ask if you cycled the tank before you got the betta. You said you've only had him for a week so I'm curious.

Did you end up bringing him home?
