looks similar to the luteus i am after! been looking at the phase 1 luteus at pier, probably get a smaller one though to save a bit of cash!
Beautiful fish T1!!

Dave

i have been told about the ones at peir i think they need cooler water thats why the larger ones are out side in the cooler tank

this maxes out at about 10 -12 inch but its so wide its funny

they are called L056 chubby pleco

As far as im aware T1 your plec hasn't actually got an L number?, the L56 is a Pseudancistrus and stays relativley small if im correct, yours seems to be a Parancistrus aurantiacus doesn't usually get past 9 inches. Lovely plec either way mate.

Dunno if your near brum but theres quite a few of them round this area.

yeah looks wide! funny! the chubby pleco's are listed as L56 so i assume that is correct, either way as said, very nice!
i asked neil at pier about the luteus and he said that his at pier live happily at around 26 celsius. that was when i questioned about thm being cooler water species. aren't they a close relative of the common pleco though? which i believe is also naturally a cooler water species? and they do well in any water lol.
i will try and research them a bit more before i decide whether to get one or not!

beautiful plec!!!

Given the space and funds I would have lots of pleco tanks. The plecs in the pier entrance tanks are fantastic, they'd look good in your big tank Dave!!1

Where are they listed as a L56?, as far as im aware the 56 is a descendant of the actual fish T1 has purchased but im 99% sure that the one he has brought isn't a 56, i have various lfs that list plecs wrongly and they are usually listed in accordance to what they were shipped in at, doesn't mean they were shipped in with the correct name either.

Well anyways again thought i would try and help and basically told im wrong by Dave again lol

BTW Dave my first post was one that was a little unsure hence the nature of how i wrote it with ? marks, im sure im correct but im OFTEN wrong as you tell me so..... nice fish anyways T1 ;)

your right the L numbers confuse me

its a Parancistrus aurantiacus but i didnt know how to spell it copy and paste is my pal

the size says 8 inch but this is bigger for sure

Ive seen some about 11 inches but they usually stay around the 9 inch mark, really are a strange prehistoric looking thing when full grown lol but do have the kinda cuteness charm ;)

i wasn't saying you was wrong, i have never had experience with these pleco's. they are listed on planetcatfish as L056. i have seen them elsewhere listed as this also, as you stated they are commonly mis identified and given wrong L numbers. doesn't really matter to me!

what plecs are those simon? haven't managed to get to pier yet! i need to go look at the luteus and the tigerfish!

Dave

the luteus are a nice pleco BUT i like to keep my tank warm 28-30 this keeps parasites at bay a must in a ray tank if you get white spot its hell as rays don't take kindly to many meds

my tank that the rays are going into is at a constant 27.5 Celsius, would you recommend upping it to between 28 and 30?
i am hoping to have the rays, arowana, tigerfish, looking into florida/spotted gars but im sure they like cooler water too, will have to work it out!
what would you recommend??
cheers,
Dave

Dave have you thought about L600...Pseudacanthicus leopardus much better suited to a warmer tank, nicer looking plec and pretty much stays the same size as the luteus. The other option is a L25 does get a bit bigger but again will withstand temps more in the 28-30 than the luteus would.

Both are stunning little plecs, both would be suitable for your size tank and im sure would be fine just as much as the luteus would be with the rays.

Sorry T1 for the hijacking the thread ;)

the rays maybe fine at the temp you stated
im not that good with Celsius so will need to quote F temps
i keep my tank at a constant 86 all year round when i do water changes in the winter it drops from 86 down to 78 then back up to 86 within a few hours

in the summer (all 2 weeks of it) my tank sits at 86-92 at its hottest then 2 water changes per week it drops to about 84 then slowly gets hotter

i find the big changes in temp are good for rays as it stimulates rain fail in the wild
what i have found is the rays are more intrested to beed after the heavy rain fall / water change

if you have problems getting the rays feeding then up the temp rays feed a lot better at high temp and will be more active

no problem

funny you mention that, i would absolutely love an L025, i wanted to buy simons one for a while but he wouldn't let me lol, don't blame him really!
they are expensive too but taking price out of the equation, i can't find any! i meen in all seriousness id be prepared to pay around £150 for a decent L025 but i just haven't seen any for sale.
the L600 is also an absolutely stunning pleco and would definitely be proud to own one but same story really, there availability. you know of any on the market?
i will up the temp to 28 and see how it goes! i will get as much advice off you as possibly as you are in the place i dream of being! keeping the p14's!
