Cherry Shrimp

I have a 60l tank with about 12 baby platys and guppies and would love some cherry shrimp but the tanks nitrate is 40 is that to high for them

The nitrate level is the same as mine straight from the tap and I keep cherry shrimp and crystal shrimp with no problems.

My concern would be keeping cherry shrimp with platys, they `re likely to end up as an expensive snack for the platys.....not good Have you thought about keeping Amano shrimp? They`re big enough not to be eaten and once comfortable with their surroundings they`re happy to be out and about and are quite funny to watch

Would Cherry or Amano shrimp go well with Neon tetra's?

Amano shrimp do not breed as readily as cherry shrimp no, but that can sometimes be a good thing as you`re not likely to get overun with them. It`s all well and good thinking it`s easy to sell or trade if you get lots of cherry shrimp but in theory it`s not always that easy. The babies would definately be eaten by the fish but if you`re not particularly worried about that happening then it`s up to you.

The best way to think about shrimp and whether they`ll be eaten is to basically think.....if it`s small enough to fit in the fishes mouth then it`s likely to get eaten

I'm about to test the Cherry Shrimp theory in my house. I've ordered some Cherry's and hope to get them this coming week. I have a small quarantine tank prepared for them with no fish in it, but I do plan to put some of the bigger specimens into my community tank to see whether or not they attract unwanted attention from my Bolivian Rams. I'm hoping the Rams won't eat the adults so that I can stock some shrimp in my main tank, too.

You could add a few cherry shrimp and a few Amano but just don`t be surprised if the cherry shrimp get eaten. At the end of the day it`s up to you

The bolivians are likely to eat the cherry shrimp, it`s what fish naturally do when something can fit in it`s mouth

I'll chance it just to find out. I've read some thread posts where people owned Bolivians that left the adult Cherrys alone. Seems kind of hit and miss.

i have amano shrimp with fully grown albino cories black skirt tetra and kuhli loaches, never had any problems got them about 2 month ago and 1 was really small, thought it got eaten but found it yesterday after 2 months haha so none have been eaten and there always out and about really good fun to watch and ot shy at all

Just thought i'd add my two cents, I have a shrimp tank with both Amano and Cherries, and a single platy (was a bully in my main) and have had none of them dissapearing

Just to add that Amano shrimp will not breed at all in a freshwater tank as they need brackish or marine (can't quite remember off the top of my head) to breed. As far as I remember the eggs are released and washed into the saltier environment where they hatch. They then make their way back to the fresh water. A bit of a palaver if you ask me but there you are!

oh ok thanks thats very useful maybe i will get cherry shrimp but the largest and see what happens and if they do not live then i will have to get Amano shrimp

also will Amano shrimp be ok in a tank with angels
