I want to change the substrate in my tanks, they all have the cheap playsand from tescos and its just far too light and bright and dilutes the colour in my fish

, however a trip to my LFS today revealed that darker substrate is very expensive and as I have a lot of tanks to change this would cost a bomb!!

Is there any cheaper dark substrate that anyones aware of ? Id appreciate a heads up

Simon

do you mean you looked at black sand at your LFS?? (how much was it for how much??)

it was a dark sand and £49.99 for one big bag that was smaller than the sand I paid £4 for from tesco and I needed three for my big tank, I dont fancy paying over a ton for sand :hyper:

50 quid!!!! at my LFS they sell 2kg bags for 4 quid each!!

I bought a 25kg bag the other day for £23. It was from a small LFS up here in sunny East Yprkshire though, bit far away for you I'm guessing.

You're welcome :)

Check MA Limpopo sand (black grey mix ) is ten pounds for 12kg I think

(just binned 45kg of it yesterday as changed my tank to light sand lol)

The dark sand is about £25 at my LFS.
£50 sounds a bit excessive!

does it have to be sand? I paid £12 for a large bag of the black soft pebbles I have by Marina. One and a half bags of this stuff did my 3ft tank - I added a finer one too for effect but it wasn't neccesary really

Hi mate have a drive over to world of water in altrincham if you have a chance. They have 25kg of black sand for £23. Going to get some myself today.

Thanks for that Liam :good:

I prefer sand to gravel in my tanks only got the one tank with gravel and it gets on my nerves at water change time plus I find sand easier to maintain. Looking forward to seeing my rainbows with darker substrate

Just been to world of water now got unipac limpopo 25kg for 20 quid.

Depending on what fish you have in I've seen a lot of tanks with slate substrate. Homebase do large bags that's 'fish safe' for £5. Smooth and rounded edges. Looks nice in a tank.
