I'd like some suggestions on what substrate to use, I don't want sand as i've tried this and found it to be a complete pain to clean, my local tfs only stock a small range of substrate so i'm more than likely going to order it online, any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance,

Mark

Id definatly go for sand, i chose gravel and im highly regretting it, ive now got to go through the pain of switching from Gravel to sand.

PANTS, was really hoping to avoid sand, i know it's the best for the catfish( and it looks aesthetically pleasing ) but as i've already mentioned i didn't get on well with the cleaning of it at all, looks like I'll be going without a catfish, rather me be disappointed than hurting the fish.

plecos, common plecos, chinese algae eaters?, otos. if it is any of those then they shoul be fine on a gravel substrate. just make sure that it is smooth

OK, so if i can find a fine pea shaped black substrate( my choice, i love black, i think it shows their colours off better ) the catfish should be ok?

yes. it should do very well, with larger, hardier catfish like BN's it wont be a problem compared to smaller, more fragile catfish like cories
