Cat Person?

I had so many plants and so much java moss in the brachy tank that the adults had trouble swimming. I still never found any fry.
Odd, and were they well-fed though? Or are they just good hunters in general and will stop at nothing to catch prey? Wish I could find these to see how they breed but then I'd need a second tank. o_O

You have expressed a common egg layer prejudice FishBlast. When you have bred Brachyrhaphis roseni, you can come back and say something like that. If you ever try to say those livebearers are easy I will indeed be surprised. Only guppies, mollies, swordtails and platies are all that easy. Many of the other livebearers are a bit of a challenge.

BAM!

They are excellent hunters Fishblast.
What does that mean Hambone?

that means you messed him up with the power of your words.. Laid a smack down on him..

edit for the removal of props..

My words have no power Hambone. I merely state what I know from my own experiences. I have no powerful status nor high powered degrees to fall back on.
As it happens I merely keep guppies because it keeps peace in the family. My wife simply loves them but has no experience to maintain a successful colony of them. I supply the "expertise" so they become more mine than hers in many ways. She is in love with "her" guppies.
Let me apologize right now to anyone out there who thought that I was doing what Hambone has said. I only say what I know and have no intention to slap anyone down. We are all in this together.

wooooo now, don't pin this on me dude.. you said it not me.. I made an observation.. As I say, words do has weight, measure them before you use them...

I'm taking back my respeck..

I have no intention of pinning anything on anyone Hambone. My intent is to provide what advice I can when I know an answer. I do not appreciate someone admiring my ability to "slap down" a fellow member either. I am not a senior member as such here with special powers, I am a member who is trying to help other members. My only added status here as a MOD is that I am willing to take on the added responsibility of correcting errors that I find and imposing discipline when someone violates our rules. Many regular members on this forum have far better fish keeping skills than I do but for one or another reason have not chosen to fill the MOD role. We MODs often make offers to very competent members who end up rejecting the added work involved in being a MOD. That does not detract from their technical contributions to this forum and we continue to value their opinions. They are the real backbone to this forum.

BAM?! The troll has been unleashed... and where was I? I was sleeping this whole time, missing this. O_O

This sounds very familiar

I used to keep a Graptemys Pseudogeographica Pseudogeographica (False Map Turtle) in a 135l tank with guppies, platys and mollies (who were sometimes also food). Then years later I really wanted to take up the aquarist hobby again, this time with fish only. We've only had our 125l tropical tank for 4 months and have already spent hundreds of £s (we have three zebra plecos). Recently my boyfriend (who initally wasn't interested in the fish at all!) decided that he wants to get a second tank!

Suleika, I can empathize but unfortunately I will agree with anyone who wants more tanks. If I had the space my mere 26 tanks might suddenly increase to over 50 of them.

So many tanks, so little time. Since you can't get more time you might as well get more tanks.

If you want to spawn fish, it is almost always best to do so in species tanks and to be prepared to remove and raise eggs/wigglers/fry in some cases.

All fish pretty much see eggs or fry as food. Expecially when they belong to other fish. But also even their own in many cases, especially for the egg scatterers.

Standby- As for swordtails all being a snap to spawn. If you can find them, let me know how you make out with X. montezumae, Rascon strain. Heck, even my blue/greens montys would stop for months on end. The mottled ivory are pretty easy. But all three are also voracious fry eaters.

Lol mine probably get full at some point, since there were quite a lot floating around that morning of the latest spawn. Or it could just be that the hoplo doesn't let some die since he shelters them. But it seems like the parents will not hunt down the fry once they are full. They will just kill them and leave them on the floor or just nip at them like they'd nip at any other fish and then mind their business.

I am not sure about monties but nezzies are darned easy. I have a 20 gallon that I placed a pair of nezzies into a little over a year ago. Today I am feeding over 30 near adult fish in that tank and have sold a few at club auctions. If I truly wanted to optimize survival I would not leave them to colony breed, but they are doing just fine that way with no help from me.

30 nearly adult swordies in 20 gal? o_O
I'm scared of exceeding 6 swordies in my fish tank. They might reach 10 cm, which would mean 6 fish almost as big as my hoplo. If they all take on the bottom dweller life, I'll have no fish at the top and only a bunch of bottom dwellers. o_O

I find that fish limit themselves to a maximum density so I allow whatever density they find acceptable. I would also find that a high density if I was standing outside looking in, but the nezzies seem to think it is alright and they are growing and prospering. I never argue with my fish.
