Been to wharf aquatics today and saw a 'texas' cichlid. Just done a bit of research and found there is two kinds of cichlids that are regularly called this.

This one was very chunky, probably 4"+ deep and about 6" long. He/she was bright blue, totally awesome colouration. Does this info help anyone ID it? Just looking into what i would need to house one. Don't think he/she was fully grown, but wouldn't want to harm one by not having a big enough tank.

Thanks.

Hi yeah there are two kinds of Texas (though many more in their family) They are Herichthys cyanoguttatus, and Herichthys Carpintis.

Carpintis looks like this - http://www.brentsmith-photography.com/-/stock-and-print/stock-photography/aquatic/herichthys-carpintis/-/medias/c9014742-7a95-11e0-868d-9363f5fcda2c-herichthys-carpintis-male

Cyanoguttatus looks like this - http://animal-world.com/encyclo/fresh/cichlid/texas.php

Carpintis has the better reputation - and probably the better colours IMO :)

Thanks Wills, it was definately a Carpintis. Would it be ok in a 4ft tank Will?

Shut it you!

The 4ft can become a 5ft within a year i'm sure ;)

Question is, should i buy the one i saw or a juvenile?

Whats the volume of the 4ft tank? and what are the current occupants if any? Texas are doable in a good sized 4 foot tank with carefully selected tankmates

48x15x18 high. The tankmates would be whatever people suggest. Haha. Its a complete blank canvas, just gathering a few thoughts and opinions.

Thanks.

Hmm tough one - it could work Carpintis do stay smaller so it could be possible but obviously bigger is always better.

I think it would be a case of the Carpintis and dithers and cats though I think

What would you suggestions be then for Dithers and Cats? Quite like the idea of a Pet Cichlid. I have space for a 5ft, just not the cash atm.

I have a juvi Carpintis in my 4xx2x2 with my Oscar and one of my Rotties. He will be fine in there as he gets bigger. Personally wouldn't want anything less than 2ft width for them.

I would think twice about getting one - stunning fish, and awesome personality, but ballsy little s£ds and quite like Convicts really (not as bad, but can deliver a nasty nip to those they don't like, even when small).

I wouldn't put one in with an Ellotti personally.

I have the option to have him/her alone, would this be ok or not?

Thanks.

Oh yeah, if you can, they are great. They don't HAVE to go alone, but companions need to be carefully considered :good:

I have mine in with a large Oscar and large Rotkeil. He got on with everyone else in my 6x2x2, apart from my new baby Geos and big Geo.

Thanks. I think I might wait until the 4ft is in place (august 23rd) then consider a youngster. Cheers.
