This is completely theoretical, I haven't even got my first tank up and running yet!
I just had the thought while in the bathroom earlier. We have a separate shower so never use the bath. If it could be suitably converted, I think it would look pretty cool :) You'd have to design it with a top view in mind, I suppose.
Practically, how would the joists cope with that weight of water over the long term? Could end in a hideous disaster-lol!

Yeah, it would work, as long as you dont bump the drain...bye bye fishes...lol....that would be bad.

But yeah, it would work of course, as long as you find a way to hook up a filter to the tub, and what not.

if a bath could hold a full bath and a person, i think that it could hold that amount of water for a long time assuming that you don't have any problem with rotten joists. it theoretically could work but if it is the same room as a shower, toilet or sink there would be a chance of foreign chemicals effecting the water quality of the bath.

Good point, I did not think of that.

when you clean your bathroom, like stated above, you use a lot of chemicals, and when used they become airborne and could land in the tub, which would be bad for the fish/your whole tank.

Hmmm, good point about the chemicals.
Perhaps best if this stayed as just an idea-lol!

Yes, soaps are pretty bad for fish and tubs are probably in fact one of the harder places to clean up and remove all traces of soap residues due to their large surface area! In an emergency though, a tub might very well be a needed thing, say if a large fish tank broke!

I agree that removing the soap residue would be difficult. Most tubs have some sort of soap scum on the surface and it is very difficult to get off. It may not be an issue but I wouldn't trust it. Another potential problem would be no cover which means fish could potentially jump out (although the water level would porbably be low enough that it wouldn't happen) and evaporation would be higher. On the other hand, if the drain had a cover over it, you could not use substrate and water changes would be a breeze. Just pull the plug to release water and then fill back up.

lol! Yes, that would be really easy wouldn't it!
It's been used as a bath about 5 times in as many years. We only got it as the bathroom's huge and it came with the suite!

yes it can be done if its clean but then again when we had a huge cigar shark who grew out of the 4ft tank we used the tub as a holding tank till we sold him he was in it for 3wks and he was fine but i wouldnt reccomend making it a permanent thing

Lol... my DH and I have been joking that we were going to convert our 2 bathtubs in to fish tanks :p We have a seperate shower as well and have only used the tub in our master bath about 6 times (washing neices and cleaning dogs), and the one in our other bathroom about 6 times as well.
Only thing I'd be worried about is fish going down the drain and either our dog Cid or cat Stewie jumping in to catch some fish :p

i would considering i might have to do it myself
i would recommend it cause it sux trying
to do it with the fish in

trust me i know :hyper:

Thought just occurred to me today-the whole electricity in bathrooms regulations could be an obstacle?

yeah, plenty of electricals keeping fish and it might be easier for it to slip into a bathtub than it is for it to fall into a tank....
