Can Someone Please Help A Bit With Layout?

My poor plants! I do like the idea and I think I will try it. At the moment it is difficult to see in that picture, but all but a couple stems of bacopa are in the corner to the left, sort of spread a little in the back and on the left side. The two in front of the wood I just threw in because they floated up and I wanted an idea of what they would look like in front of that big rock (I don't like it). Do you think I should keep the bacopa together on that side and get something else for the rock's side? Maybe a vallis or something? (My aquatic plant knowledge is poor.) Vallis didn't do well last time I tried, but I have a tiny bit more knowledge now. Maybe a sword? Something along those lines, perhaps.

I don't know about medium growth stuff but will have a bit of time to research that. I can keep my little spiky grass and hope it spreads. It seems to want to.

I've never been really into planted tanks so only stuck with the 'normal' stuff like swords, vallis, etc.

Maybe post in the planted section for some ideas once you have areas and heights sorted out.

I agree, I think that moving the wood more to one side and i think back a bit will help it look less... awkward. The plants will fill in more with time, and you can continue to add and move as needed. I'd recommend a few more mid to foreground plants once there's more room from the wood moving.

Continue to update us!

I am going to try that today! I have high hopes. Haha. The truth is that I always feel like there is more area in the tank than there is, so when I actually go to do things like this, I realise that I can't find a way to move things back, or create gaps, etc. But I will try! I will have to use my imagination for the middle height plants for a while. I need to save my pennies in case I need to make an emergency transatlantic trip in a month or so. Plants need to wait. :( But they will happen!

Okay, I have tried with the gap between the wood and that weird rock that my fish love so much. The pictures are terrible and imgur won't let me delete the worse, so I apologise for that. Pretend the slate is green. I hope to make it a carpet of riccia as soon as I have a chance. The background is definitely temporary, and sorry, I know it is confusing to the eye. I will get more plants obviously. Is it an improvement? Still awful? I put the lava rock in to give more caves on that side, but is that a bad idea? I left the red lava rock out. I feel bad about not using it though. There is a picture of all of the wood out of the tank to get an idea of what I have to work with.

I am just linking to the album now because I don't want to hurt people's bandwidth.

Ditch the lava rock and shift the decorative rock so it's nearer to a 45 degree angle off the back IMO.

All in all a vast improvement and I think once the planting is matured it will look great :)

Okay! Thank you! I have just covered myself in hand cream (my hands don't like being submerged and handling sand  ) but I will try that tonight. And take a better picture. Do you think the big rock is good on its side like that? I tried standing it up but wasn't sure how it looked, and got a bit worried about it falling on the glass.

Also, does anyone know what kind of rock it is? It isn't something that comes from any of the places I have lived, as far as I know.

It looks fine on its side IMO.

I think they are a type of sandstone and quite common in the LFS trade, seen a few but don't know where they originate or how the colour is done.

I used to see that once in a while in my old LFS, but haven't seen them in this city. Sandstone would make sense I guess, although it is really heavy and rough compared to the sandstone I see here in Scotland (sandstone land  ).

Maybe I can give the lava rock to my son's future tank.

I thought I was speaking to a Scottish person but didn't check first. Well then you will know what I mean when I say that. Anyway, the fish like it so that's what matters most.
