All these hundreds of CAE's erroneously sold to unwitting people, where do they all get to? Does anyone actually keep full grown adult CAE's properly? Or do they all end up down the toilet when someone finds them eating everything in their little tank (being sold as companions for goldfish for example)?

Who knows..... wouldn't doubt if people flush them, or think it's a good idea to release them in to a pond or lake or something.

I took mine back to the store...I was quite angry as they sold him to me as an OTO! I didn't ask, if I could bring him back. I just walked in and left him there!

so ultimately none of these CAE's in pet stores last long enough to get to adulthood?

Probibly.... The CAE's at my LFS will probibly see adulthoot in the store before they are all sold.... The boss bought them in a couple of years ago, and is now thinks theyare a best seller, as their tank is always well stocked... Little has he realised that he is the only preson whom trys to sell them to customers, as the rest fo the staff know their habbits.... Further to cross his sales patter, many of the people he trys to push them to normaly deal with the other staff, whom have told him what they are realy like, hence they never sell. Just goes to show the bubbles some managers get into at times... We keep getting more though when he does the order rather than the supervisor for the fish room...

The shop's un-official policy on them is not to take them in unless purchased there origionally. Officially (according to the boss) they are a best seller, and we always welcome them into one of our tanks

All the best

Where I work on Saturdays adult CAE's are often handed in after devastating tanks, they do get sold on - usually to cichlid tanks, where they seem to do fine. Some people just like having tanks full of aggressive and nippy fish, they can also live without trouble with things like tiger barbs, giant danios and Buenos Aires tetras. They can actually fit into a lot of peoples set ups, so the ones handed in do usually find a decent home :good:.
Though I hate the fact that they sell so well, often customers will ignore the advice saying they already have one with no problems  .

A former colleague of mine keeps telling how she lost her CAE in an "accident". She had bought it as a "community-friendly algae eater" only to find out in time that it was neither friendly nor the least bit interested in algae. But the store she had bought it from no longer existed, and she didn't have the heart to just kill the fish. So, while figuring out what to do with the CAE, she kept it with a bunch of danios who were too quick to be seriously harassed by it.

So this one time after feeding the fish she had forgotten the cover of the tank open, only to hear a little "splat" after a while. She ran into the room, fearing for her danios, and saw two things: the chinese algae eater trashing on the floor, and her cat walking in from the other end of the room.

She decided she hadn't actually heard the little "splat" and left the room, and the CAE was never seen again.

That's how the story goes anyway. I always suspect she had a hand in making the accident happen.
