I know its obviously possible to build you own tank but do you need a special type of glass or will any do?

It has to be a certain thickness to withstand the pressure of the water - the bigger the tank the thicker the glass (sorry, I don't know what thickness though :*) ). Also you should use aquarium silicone as a sealant.

Go to your lfs, and ask, or put a tape measure to 1 of the tanks to find out.

Or alternatively visit www.garf.org

There's a whole section on "how to build..."

All you do is input the size of tank you want and it calculates the thickness of glass, the sizes of each panel. It also gives detailed instruction on puting it together.
There's even a section on building your own stand.

Im planning on building a tank plus stand sometime in the near future.

Paul.

Stands are so much fun to build cuz theres no limit. I built a stand for my 55 and 20 out of 1/4 inch steel. Its HEAVY!!!
