BRISTOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
right, i want to start breeding fish, but i'm not sure what to breed, obv because im new to it, i dont want it to be too complicated. i was just wondering what you guys started out breeding, and how you went about it.

suggestions and info, stories etc woud be good!!!

ta,

carl

it depends how much you want to spend,

guppys and platys will breed in a single tank all you need is a breding net for them to grow out in.

if you want to breed say angels you need a much larger tank to begin with then you have to wait for them to pair off and lay eggs (you will need to buy half a dozen angels as they can`t be sexed) then you will need grow out tanks and fry tanks.

itsw all down to how much room/money you have

you`l find lots of helpful info on breeding angels here

but depending on the size of fish the more space you will need

Before you get into breeding, do some research. See what the local shops need, and what sells well. Many times finding a home for the fish is more difficult than breeding.

thas why im posting here!!!

the thing, i dont really want to breed common livebearers, which is all they seem to want, or other things, such khulis, which i have no idea how to breed.

which brings me to the point, does anyone have any info on breeding loaches???

breeding khuli loaches has been know but only on 'accident' from what i know of. I too want to find out more about khuli loaches and maybe breed them 1 day if possible.

Breeding loachs in general is tough, and usually accidental. Most everyone does livebearers, you might want to look into corys, they seem to sell well, and aren't too difficult to breed.

The reason you need to ask around locally is that what sells well at one shop doesn't move at another. I have that situation with some albino bristlenose I'm breeding, one shop loves them, another doesn't want them. Both shops buy angels from me. They are less than 2 miles apart, sometimes that short of a distance makes a difference, it usually has to do with their customer base.

Be prepared for being swamped with fish. The market fluctuates, sometimes wildly. Summer is traditionally a little slower around here, it picks up around October. Figuring out those fluctuations takes time, and some times there is no reason for it. Have some extra tanks, I have a large plastic kiddie pool stashed in the garage rafters for a worst case situation. :)

I think angels are probably a good bet, mine bred almost every 2 weeks on the dot when I had a pair... got rid of them because of it, actually, they were real terrors to their tankmates when breeding
You could look into kribensis... I don't really know much about them, personally, but they're small and relatively easy to breed, along with being a pretty popular fish so you shouldn't have much trouble finding homes for the fry. Maybe even rams?

Your best bet would be to Google it, if you think rams might be an option.

Well you can breed Killies or RainbowFish. They are not that hard but you must do some research on it first. But most people that start to breed usually start when they buy there first live bearers and they find that one of the females is pregnant and you have fry and that is where most people start. But I would recommend to breed fish that are easier and with the more experience you get you will be able to breed many more fish. But it is up to you to start with whatever fish you want :dunno:

You could always breed bettas... but they require a lot of research. If you just plop two in a tank together they will beat each other up.

Bettas are awlays in demand.

Bettas also have some of the most labor intensive fry care. Unless you want to spend hours cleaning juvie jars every week, I wouldn't do it... you have to separate the males into their own individual containers when they become aggressive.

thanks for all your help, i've just aquired a 3 foot tank which i got for v.cheap, YAY!!! i'm gona try angels i think. how many angels do you think i could fit in a tank this size???
