Day 9 Fishless cycle

12 Hour tests

Ammonia - 0 ( -4)
Nitraite - 1 ppm (No move)
Nitrate - 40+ ppm
PH 7.6
High PH 8

Should i keep dosing ammonia at between 4 and 5 ppm or cut back to maybe 3ppm untill nitrite goes down to 0?

Need a little bit of advice

Am i over dosing my tank by adding 4 ppm every 12 hours?

Just been talking to the bloke in my LFS and he said i should be dosing my tank every 12 hours with 2 ppm of Ammonia and not 4 ppm every 12 hours

Much rather take the advice from on here than my LFS

I tend to follow this:

Dose every 24 hours (if dropped to zero)
Test every 12 hours

:good:

5ppm every 24hrs is what Wiggle suggested on another thread recently mate.

Not sure I understand your Nitrite stat - only 1ppm. Is that correct?

Yep 1ppm

I will change the way im adding ammonia i was adding 4 ppm every 12 hours which is probs why my nitrite went off the chart untill a few days ago

Its funny, I asked the same question the other day and got a similar response.

My Nitrite stats have started dropping over 24 hours beautifully, although I am still topping up to 4ppm evey 24 hours.

I think i might have set myself back a few days by adding 4 ppm every 12 hours :(

Not to worry tho now i know i was doing it wrong i can make it right and push on from there :good:

If your Nitrite is only 1ppm, and your adding 5*2.7ppm per day, then it looks like your cycle is practically done.

here's hoping :D

with a bit luck by the weekend nitrite will be 0 then i can spend next week just feeding in the ammona and stock my tank a week on saturday then not have to worry about my dad adding ammonia to my tank incase he goes OTT on it while im away in Paris

yes you just add once every 24 hrs :good:

don't worry you won't have done any serious damage to the cycle, yes maybe delayed it a bit by getting nitrite too high, but it won't have any lasting effect so just drop to adding once every 24hrs now and test every 12 hrs

Will cut back to adding Ammonia 24 hours and not 12 :good:

Just had a spare 5 mins so thought i would do a ammonia test on my tank water after adding 4ppm this morning at 11am and to show my dad how to use the kit so he can cehck the readings while i am away

So i did the test waited 5 mins then checked the readings and was some what surprised to see that the ammonia was already down to 0 ppm i knew it would not be still 4 ppm but was not expecting it to be 0 already so i am hoping this is a good thing

Just be sure that your nitrIte test is REALLY showing you a reading of 1ppm. Quite often when my nitrIte is off the scale, I put the drops in the tube, they turn from the pale blue to deep purple almost straight away, and then if you shake the tube and leave for 5 minutes, the colour darkens, then starts to pale, and goes back to almost identical to the 1ppm colour.
If the drops go in and change to deep purple very quickly, (ie. before you have time to cap and shake), then the test is likely 'maxed'. The colour change in over the 5 minutes should be in one direction only. Starting with the pale blue, and gradually working it's way through the colours of the chart. If it reaches the high reading BEFORE the 5 minutes is up, and then starts to lighten again this is a FALSE reading and the level is still MAXED

:)
