Bojangles Fishless Cycle

Forgot to add to my other post i added a fluval 1 plus filter to the tank aswell todayas im looking at setting up another Betta tank

Just did a quick Nitrate and Nitrite test

Nitrate is 10 ppm
Nitrite 0 ppm
PH 7.6
Hard PH 8

Pic of inside of tank

Need to pick up a few more bags of gravel because i only have a thin covering also some of the fake plants will be coming out when the cycle is done to go in to my parents tank when they pull there finger out and actually buy it the battleship is also my dads was going to keep it but it dont go in my tank

Sorry to hear your problem. One thing I do with a new tank is fill it up (in the tub or shower if possible) and let it stand for a while to make sure it doesn't leak.

3 - airstone can be beneficial but it's not essential, so you can turn it on and off as you like
Actually, with the high temp tht you cycle at, you do need the airstones to keep the oxygen level up. During fishless cycles is the only time I use an airstone.

If you don't have live plants, you really don't need a lot of gravel. A half inch is plenty. You do need more for live plants though as there has to be enough for the roots.

Cheers for the reply rdd :good:

Dont think i will be puting live plants in untill i get abit more experienced at things so i will hold back added another 2 bags of gravel.

Today i bought a new testkit £10 because on of the test tubes was broke but i have a few already so thats a nice saving :D also got some stress zyme that was going spare from a mate will do to remove the stuff in my tap water.

Todays tests

Ammonia 5 ppm
Nitrite - 0 ppm
Nitrate 10 ppm
PH 7.9
Hard PH 8

Also added 10ml of Stress Zyme

How many times aday should i be checking my water?

In the Durham area, as well as Richardson's where I know there is an API kit in stock, there is also Fish Alive in Dragonville - Next to Tescos.

I'm sure Chiltern Aquatics would have on in, as well.

Otherwise, try Ebay?

Stress Zyme will not "remove the stuff" in your tap water. Stress Zyme is one of the bacteria-in-a-bottle products that help the biological state of the tank, but it does nothing for the chlorine and chloramines in the water.
For that you need either "Stress Coat" or "Tap Water Conditioner", (if you are going with API products), see the links below for descriptions:

Tap Water Conditioner

Richardson's is ok for "run of the mill" stuff. They don't stock many interesting tropical fish - but oddly, they recently added a decent marine range.

Horns in Shotton have some good fish too. Plus, the (fat) woman in there seems to know her stuff very well. She's stopped me from overstocking my tank in the past - none of that "I want your money" crap that so many people seem to get.

Chiltern Aquatics is also very very good.

Just a quick post to record my readings

Ammonia - 4 ppm
Nitrite - 0 ppm
Nitrate 10 ppm
PH 7.6 /High PH 8

Quick question

Which is the best cycle to go with add and wait or add daily ?

most people go with add and wait, the danger with the add daily method is that it is possible to have too much ammonia so at the start when it's not being processed very quickly you can sort of overdose on ammonia and scupper yourself.

Thnx MW :good:

I will go with that one then

My test results are actually

Ammonia 4-ppm
Nitrite 0.25 - ppm
Nitrate 10 - ppm

Nitrite is up 0.25 ppm i musta gotten that used to typing 0 ppm

Just read your thread, friggin pets at home eh

I use Fish Alive at Durham, friendly staff, great range of fish and loads of stuff to buy.

I have been using Chilton Aquatics alot at the minute, basically cos its just down the road and very handy. Been talking to the owner who specialised in Discus, knows his stuff like. These may be a bit far away for you to travel Bojangles?

Fish Alive at Durham has been expensive for things I've looked for in the past.

Have you been speaking to Paul Roe at Chiltern? That's who I have been exchanging Emails with - and its who I bought my Disucs from - I'm going to get moe soon!
Great shop that place - They even sell food at wholesale prices if you bring your empty tub back!

Canny hike like but can always bum a lift of the old man :p

Where abouts is fish alive in Durham?, think i know where it is but not 100% sure

Todays test results

Ammonia between 2 and 3 ppm (drop of 1 ppm overnight)
Nitrites - between 0.25 and 0.50 more on the 0.50 part i would say
Nitrate - 10 ppm
PH7.6 / High PH 8

Think i would have been alot further on if my tank had not broke down when it did
