bogwood update - i have drained all the cold water from the beer cooler and added boiled water, i can now see small bubbles rising from the wood and it seems to want to sink instead of bobbing about on the surface.... i hope this works, so far so good.....

wood still floating and bubbles stopped so i am re filling with boiling water again. loads of tanning has already come out and loose bits of root/wood has come away so thats 1 good thing.....

anymore advice is welcome!

if i need to weigh it down, how do i go about this?

Define 'large'. A big bit of slate will weigh down all but the largest bits of bogwood that refuse to sink. Continuing to soak as you're doing with a paving slab or similar on top if it's still floating will help in the meantime, but if when you come to put it in the tank it's still floating, a large bit of slate will keep it pinned down until it decides to sink on its own (unless, as I say, it's massive). Beyond that, you're SOL apart from weighing down with something inert and metal (which I can't think of at the moment).

Just keep it in boiling water/very hot water all the time and eventually it will become saturated with water and WILL sink.

Just takes a little patience.

I soaked mine in hot water for 2 weeks and boiled it for 3 days after that!

its still in the beer cooler with really hot water, loads of tanning coming out....

Just keep it in there, and change the water out for hot water like once a day.

Maponi wood, which is what I always buy, will sink without any soaking/boiling.

This happens every time I buy a new piece of Maponi wood.

IM SURE YOUR RIGHT HOWEVER IN MY EXPERIENCE MAPONI WOOD IS THE ONLY ONE WHICH I HAD TO WEIGHT DOWN TO SINK.

Are you sure it is maponi wood? I just bought a piece not too long ago, and it sank like a rock!

yEP iM FAIRLY CERTAIN IN THE UK THE BOGWOOD AND MANGO IS SLIGHLY DARKER IN COLOUR THAN MAPONI UNLESS ITS LABELLED WRONG...

Weird, because here the mopani wood sink every time, and it is lighter in color than the two.
