Blue Lobster

My friend is offering me some blue lobsters (not his, but someone he knows). I dont think i have room for them as i plan to get some more corys soon, but i was intrigued.

Who knows about lobsters? What do they eat? How friendly are they in a tank? What water/living conditions do they need? How big to they get?

Quite simply they are #19###s. There are some posts around the forum already. I know I posted on one of them a month or two back at length about my personal experiences. If you get one, it needs to be in a species tank with nothing else as it will relentlessly hunt down your fish and kill them. If you have more than one in a tank it needs to a minimum of a 40 gal. tank as they are territorial and will fight (to the death in most cases). Because of how territorial they are they also require hiding spots. They are escape artists and will climb fake plants and destroy real ones. I fed mine sinker algea wafers and it really liked it.

Once again, DO NOT mix them with fish.

a blue lobster will think corys are moving food. they kill anything that lives on the bottom. i had luck with one, only because he was kept with a blood parrot, a convict and a jd. he killed everything else. my firemouth, oscar, ect. they are great for scavenging but they poop a lot and the poop is unsightly. its a better idea to put a pirhanna or a shar in your tank rather than a blue crawdad. hope that gives you an idea

I put one in my tank a little while back...every night there would be one or two less fish lol. So eventually it became an excuse to get another tank

They will also try to get out of the tank like its prison.... mine used to climb up the filter tube and push the lid out of the way... ended up taping everything down... oh, and yes it will devour anything around its size or smaller.

Yes, mine ate all my platys. Then i put him in his own little 70L in the kitchen. In the night he managed to escape his tank, drop down to the floor and crawl out the kitchen into the living room. Which he then managed to get across the room 20ft+ and crawl behind the tv at the far end. I found him there dead the next morning.

So yes, they eat anything small enough and sometimes big enough and are MASTER escape artists.

by blue lobster, i take it you meen red claw crayfish or Cherax Quadricarinatus as it is the only legal cray you can own in the UK.

they will eat pretty much any thing, i feed mine Hikari Crab Cuisine as a staple but feed veggies and meat also.

some are friendly some are not. I brought one when i first started the hobby, he now lives by himself!!

they like hard alkali water with lots of hiding places

they get big, like up to 12" ive had mine about 3 years and hes 5"

they make very interesting pets, every one who comes round loves him because he is unusual. he has escaped five times since ive had him, the first time was most worring, now i know where to look! if you can home it by its self then take it.

Also if you have them with cichlids the fish can kill them when the moult!!
