Black Water Tank Launch

I just finished completing two black water tank set ups with my new RODI system. One houses a pair of cockatoo and ten n. beckfordi and the other another pair of cockatoo of a different morph and ten h. erythrozonus. Here is the first tank.

Just an fyi: n beckfordi is one of the few species of nannostomus with a reputation of hunting frys. Doesn't mean they will get all of them but they are likely to get a few.

Thanks for the tip. I have been lucky. Before I made this tank black water, the pair in there now have spawned three times over the last six months and each time I had over 30 juvenile survivors. More than I can handle. I sold many to two local fish stores and gave away twice as many. We will see how this pair does under Blackwater conditions. Maybe the beckfordi will get hungrier.

I've been lucky with beckfordi - I used them a lot with Apistos and had no predation issues. That says nothing against that tip - different set ups, diets, individual fish... you never know til you see.

I think you'll enjoy those aquariums. They look great, and have good ideas in them. Blackwater tanks are fun.

Alder cones, oak leaves and catappa leaves

both tanks I consider black water, came from wood… my 1st was Malaysian Driftwood,
and I tried boiling it with baking soda as an extreme, and even so, it took almost a year before I could see the fish through the coffee, after a year and regular water changes that wood is nice now…

my 2nd came from Mopani wood, and that stained the water nicely, not overly like the Malaysian…
