Black Ghost Knife Fish stabbed

If the hole is quite deep I think i would medicate him with an internal bacteria med and some melafix, sorry great you got it out, thank goodness.

Will go see my lfs tomorrow and see what they have, they are very good at giving advice and always seem keen to help without even without trying to sell you anything.

Thanks for the advice wilder and anyone else who replied.

Will update you in a few days letting you know how it goes. :D

Good luck, hope he gets well soon, how is he now is he abit stressed or fine.

may I ask what kind of plant that was, and how it stabbed him? I would have never thought a plant would stab a fish.

I don't know if you'd be able to get ahold of some, but colloidal silver is supposed to be wonderful for tissue damage - it helps things heal very quickly.

He doesnt even seem bothered one little bit. Only thing i have noticed is he is swimming a bit slower but saying that, he does chill out from time to time. not sure the name of the plant but heres a pic. I think whats happened is some leaves had broken off and stuck in the grill of the internal filter, so the pointy bit was sticking out the side and he always swims up along the side of it because the outlet of the external filter goes down there and I think he like's the current. So he must have speared him self as I've read these fish are pretty blind.

Gonna take those plants out cause they dont seem to be doing to well anyway

That's a really strage thing to see. It's hard to figure how he could do that as the plant stem shouldn't be that stiff. I hope he heals.

On the lighter side, when I saw this post, I had to check it out, especially when I saw that a knife fish had stabbed himself. I thought it was a joke. That is a funny topic line. Once again, I hope you can get it all removed and he gets better.

PLEASE
I have had BGK for yrs... melafix can NOT be dabbed on him...
in fact if you feel you must use it,use 1/2 the recommended dose...

I would prefer to see you do large water changes every other day until it's healed..

also...please people who know nothing about BGK should really refrain from giving lousy advice... BGK can NOT NOT NOT shock you.The electrical impulse is extremely weak and is used for food location and navigating...that's it.

If any one who owns a BGK ever feels the need to medicate it,please please please ask advice first and then go read the back of any med you might want to use and see if it can be used on scale-less fish..if it doesn't say specifically that it is SAFE for them...do NOT use it...

aquatic plants are usually very soft. i've never seen one that has strong pointy branches... maybe it isn't an aquatic plant?

glad to hear the fish seems good though!

can neosporin be used on bgks? i knwo it can on gars and bichirs

That's the strangest freak accident I've ever seen

I would advise adding melafix to the tank and doing daily water changes to keep things clean, melafix is a 100% natural remedy with the only active ingredient being 1% tea tree oil so will not harm any of your fish.

NEVER treat a tank with a strong medication like those intended for internal bacteria unless the situation really calls for it as these medications will kill off some of the bacteria in your filters and cause problems with water quallity and oxygen levels.
