Here's a picture update of my bichir species. I have a P. ornatipinnis, P. senegalus platinum var., P. sp (possibly a palmas varient or strange senegalus), and a new bichir, P. teugelsi. P. teugelsi is a VERY nice looking bichir species that is not often seen.

Feeding video. The fish that are in the video are all of the bichirs, S. jurupari, the dat, flagtail prochilodus, dragon knife, black lancer cat wiggling in the background, and the three beacon pleco.

Your fish are gorgeous. :good: Gorgeous oddballs.
Someone has a thing for bichir's. :shifty:
Hey veil, haven't seen you around here in a while.

I have slowly come to love bichirs, especially the upper jaw species. I don't know what it is about them, but after getting the senny, I couldn't resist getting more and more! I am hoping to get 2 more species (P. palmas palmas and P. delhezi) to finish my collection (until I get a larger tank, of course!).

They are nice fish, I would be worried about the ornate eating the senegalus, the unknown bichir is also a senegalus.
Its P. senegalus senegalus :good:

and then I would be worried bout the P. teugelsi eating the ornate as they get huge. They have one in the British Aquairum Superstore which is about 15"+ and is something like £260...

They look nice when they are small, but when large they do look a lot like tu*ds with a head :)

I am worried about the ornate in general. She's already eaten a couple of tank mates before and right now she is only a bit larger than everyone else. I knew I would have to eventually get rid of her, but at the moment everything is large enough in the tank not to become a meal. Unfortunately, it's just a matter of a few months until she gets too big. :(

I didn't think the teugelsi would be a problem, because they seemed more elongate, than stocky like the ornate. The teugelsi's head is tiny in comparison to the other bichirs, even though it is the largest one I have, after the ornate (pushing 8"). I'm not sure what to do, now that you've said that about the teugelsi. I knew the day would come for the ornate, but having to get rid of the teugelsi is going to suck.

Anyway, the only reason why I was hesitating to call it a senegalus, is that when I bought it, it was on dark gravel and had an awesome pattern, but now on light sand, it looks like a senegalus. Does the senegalus senegalus usually change like that? It doesn't matter either way, I just want to get the right ID. :good:

like with all fish they can change colour to an extent, the fish may have been stressed, or young. As when you P. senegalus have dots down the lateral lines.

I would give it a positive ID as P. senegalus senegalus, as the upper jaw protrudes over the lower.
P. senegalus meridonalis has equal length bottom and top jaws.

Everyone I know who has had P. ornatipinnis has had to get rid of it, as they are very greedy fish. A little like my P. endlicheri endlicheri, who is hopefully getting rehomed in the next few weeks.

Very nice, i've been waiting for a reasonably priced teugelsi to become available here but they are still going for silly money.

More pictures of the Dragon knife please, thats one thats been on the wanted list for a loooooong time but i've yet to even here of one in the UK.

Update us with a pic after he is settled in and gets his color back. :good:

Looking good mate. Ornates are quiet naughty fish and will take down fish that you would think are to big for them to eat. Are you juripari paired up they do look nice. Oh and yeah more pics of the dragon knfie please.

Ive been awaiting you getting one aswell

They are apparently one of the larger upper jaw species and would be nice to see one in a "large" tank :)

Wow, I'm only gone for a little while and come back to a bunch of posts. :D

Thank you for all of the compliments everyone. I will update with better pictures of the teugelsi and I will attempt to get a better picture of the dragon knife. It's a sneaky little devil that likes to stay in that hole in the wood 24/7. It doesn't even go very far from it during the nighttime.

CFC, thankfully the person I bought the teugelsi from had a reasonable price on it at $100 (which is 50 pounds). I don't think I could have found it anywhere else, so my choices were limited anyway.

Mark, I think the jurupari are a pair, but they have not spawned for me before. One is pretty dull and larger and the other is smaller but has much better markings, so I think they are female and male, respectively. One time, the "male" was exhibiting spawning behavior (he had a close encounter with the overflow ) but the "female" didn't show any interest and no eggs were found. :dunno:

§tudz, thanks for the ID. I wasn't really sure what to make of the little thing when I bought him. :good:
