I have been using coconut shells for years as natural caves in my community tank. Since these are not naturally found in the Thames valley they were originally bought. Its essentially half a coconut shell with a doorway cut into it so it looks like a little hut. It also has a hole in the "roof" of the hut. Three of these are visible in my signature.

The other night as I checked on the tank before going to bed I noticed movement. This was really lucky as it was after lights out. One of my silly (not so) little pepper cories had gone in through the door and decided to exit via the chimney. It was well and truly stuck. There was no way it could have got out forward as its dorsal fin could not make the gap and it could not move backward. I did manage to free it with a bit of pushing and shoving. It swam off with no visible signs of injury.

I have now removed the shells from the tank until I am able to plug them

Naw poor little darling, Hope the little guy/girl is okay!! They love to explore the little munchkins, mine get into everything in the tank

When I first saw the title, I thought someone was strucked by a falling coconut... Lol

In my country, sometimes during heavy rain that is accompanied by lightnings and thunders, the lightnings would struck down some tall coconuts trees.
The lightnings are dangerous as the thw voltages and currents are extremely high.

I just bought my first coconut hut. It’s in one of my betta tanks though. I’ll definitely not put it in with my cories. Thanks for the warning!

You can actually cover up the hole so that the fish can't go through it.
Perhaps, you can squeeze a small piece of "stiff" sponge that won't degrade easily into the hole to cover it.

Just dry the coconut shell and put a blob of silicon in the hole. Make the door a bit bigger and have no chimney. Then the fish can go in and out through the door.

I’m sorry I laughed, I’m just imaging that in my head!

You can try to plug it with silicon as @Colin_T said, ;)

Same, its really dangerous to go outside of my house especially during the rain because theres a big coconut tree in front of my house, one of my friend of friends died because of coconut struck on head as well :(

When I lived in Florida, I was surrounded by super tall palm trees. When ever the coconut farmers cake and payed us to cram our coconuts, they let us try some of the milk inside. It was tasty! :pepsi:
