Bettas Need Heaters?

i was quite lucky and my bettas in their 3 gallon tanks have a 25 w heater that i picked up for £5. It was a special offer but the others i've seen were about £15! However in british weather if you can i recommend a heater

Look online then, there is no way you cant find a cheap small heater. Sorry, I should have said 7 US dollars. Yes the temp in the wild would fluctuate but the giant amount of water would fluctuate much much more slowly and a very small amount. Think of how long it would take to make million and millions of gallons of water to move up or down a degree or two, very long time.
and the small containers that breeders use and keep out doors? even in the tropics it can get very cold at night.
recomend me a heater small enough for 3gal tanks then

i'll have a look when i get home for you for the make of it, but i use a 25 watt heater in my 3 gallon, (my £5 bargin) and put a heater guard round it. I'll post back when i get home :)

It depends. If you just have a few bettas, yes, heaters would be ideal. But if you were breeding, face, it, you couldn't have about 5watt heaters for every container unless you wanted to start a fire.

looked online and the only one i found suitable for my needs is a 7.5 watt heater for $12.99US but the company do not apear to ship overseas

I keep a heater with all my Bettas, I wouldn't dream of keeping them without one. The weather changes too quickly here in the UK so I prefer to be able to maintain a constant temperature for my boys.

I always put heaters on my bettas. Heck they are tropical. But then again it all depends on warm your house is. My house is normally around 68ish in the winter and 75ish in the summer. So I need heaters

25watters work great. I've used 25watters on as small as a one gallon tank.

whats wrong with a heater, its not like there always on, there are thermostats, so getting one doesnt mean it will always be used. I find them a just in case. What if your in home heater stops working at the dead of night in the middle of winter when outside is below freezing? Run on over to petsmart (if in US)? Oh no its midnight, no place is open.... Now what?

sound to me like people like to quote info as if its gospel and cant be strayed from. a betta can be kept without a heater in a warm room. 68 degrees is the coldest a betta can live in. yes they fall into the cat of tropical but as with alot of tropical fish they can be kept at lower temps. just like alot of cold water fish can be kept in warmer water.

I've just bought a 25w heater for my 3 gal betta tank, it cost me £17.99 at PAH and that was the cheapest i could find. It was worth the money though as it has an easy to read temperature scale making it easier to set the overall temperature of the tank.

It is down to the individual on whether or not you feel your betta would be happier with a heater, you know how much the temperature in your home fluctuates. Since I live in the UK and the temperature in my home is never stable, I decided buying a heater would be best. Although, I was told a 3 gal did not need a heater, I had to disagree.

There ya go. A 25w heater for under a tenner.
And here... http://www.google.co.uk/products?hl=en&amp...&lnk=prsugg
a whole page of 25w heaters to choose from, all under £15. :good:
Never any reason for not having a heater. Acclimatising tropical fish to cooler water is totally unfair. Be like trying to acclimatise yourself to living in fridge like temps 24/7. We'd cope better because we can put on a jumper anytime....and we're warm blooded! They aren't.
It's obvious you love your fish so please, give them what they really need. :)

Sorry blue betta, my computer crashed so I was unable to get on and reccomend a cheap heater for you.
Reyn-I stand by my statement that they are tropical fish that deserve a temperature of what they would live in and is best for their health. Yes they COULD live in colder temps, you could live in a house with a temp of 50 degrees all the time, but it wouldnt be very pleasant. I also still say the temp in the house will fluctuate throughout the day, which is easily fixed with a heater.
Its pretty apparent the commen consensus is that betta tanks should have heaters. It is nice to see most of us on here care enough to spend the money on a small heater for our pets.
Musho-Thats a very good point aswell, heaters arent on for long anyway and cost practically nothing. Also, assuming you lose your heat and not the power, a heater is a life saver.

Sincerely,
Drew
