im looking to get 4 female bettas for my 20 gallon, and 1 male for my 5 gallon could i put one of the females in the 5 gallon once hes made a bubble nest?

I Think that you will have to remove all the gravel, I tried putting sand in one of my tanks on top of gravel and in a few days it had filtered through below the gravel.

How would i go about doing this with fish in there?

The easiest way to do it is to get all the fish out and into a bucket of tank water, then remove the rest of the water and old gravel. Add the thoroughly washed sand, add all hardscape, start to fill, add any plants, finishing filling, ensure water is of similar temperature, add filter back into the tank, acclimatise your fish back in.
