Bethk's Cycle Diary - 30Ltr Tank

Split into two different threads now.

What can I do to get that Nitrite down? I'm worried about my fish

For whichever tank has the fish in it, larger and more frequent water changes will be necessary if the nitrite manages to get above 0.25ppm before you can be home again to change water. (am assuming fish are in the 18L and that is the other thread now?)

Hi Beth,

OK, now we have the two tanks spit into their respective fish-in and fishless cycle threads and this one is the fishless cycle. I'm assuming you've got your liquid test kit as we are seeing you give us daily results. Are we now waiting for you to find the right household ammonia? I forget. Its now time that we could start dosing the ammonia that will feed the bacteria. Let us know.

~~waterdrop~~ :)

Is that a good thing?

Would it be ok to go down to a local garden center or Homebase and buy a normal one?

Yes, I have my liquid test kit x

A fishless cycle absolutely needs some source of ammonia for the bacteria to grow. The most commonly used source is pure household ammonia, sometimes called clear ammonia. Homebase is one of the places that people in the UK find it. Other fishless methods use various decaying organic materials to create the ammonia for a cycle but ammonia itself is easier to measure and use.
