Best Species Tank ?

Hi guys,
I currently have a new fish tank now that I upgraded my oscars tank, then tank is 24 inches long 12 inches tall and 12 inches deep, I need a species tank of either a schooling fish, not shoaling or a single fish, even a couple like I don't know a couple of kribs or something, I have no idea of what I want, not shrimps because they require too stable conditions, maybe even a fish only marine, I can buy the water, cant afford a ro unit though, so any fish from predatory to schooling, your Descision really, I was even considering just having a pleco or a group of synodontids,
I don't have a clue,

according to the scientific definition I learnt in biology I can't think of a schooling fish in an aquarium. Schooling is consistently swimming in close formation all in the same direction, whilst shoaling is grouping for defensive or social reasons. Many shoaling fish will demonstrate schooling behaviour when travelling but won't turn as a group for example or stay in formation if threatened but will scatter.

I love looking at shoals of fish in planted tanks, just wish I could get mine looking like the ones I see on here, but as they are daughters tanks then stocking was really her choice. I found cherry shrimp quite hardy and you should have stable water conditions for most fish shouldn't you? If it was me I'd aim for a planted tank with some micro rasbora and cherry shrimp or other neocardina (as clean up crew). 2 foot might prove to be a little small for a plec but a group of pitbull plecos or ottos could work out.

If there is no schooling fish than I will go with shoaling, what about something typical like neon tetra in a planted tank with cherry shrimp, also I I added tannins to the water to make it look murky but clear Luke a natural setup ?

I have 18 phantom tetra's in a tank on their own. My wife calls them 'ping' fish as when you place flake food on the surface they dart to the food and dart back down again, ping, ping, ping. Silly I know, but you might get what I mean. They have an interesting fin activity, as they seem to signal with fins that seem big one moment and non-existent the next; very odd but most interesting.

I've got that in one of the tanks and it does look good but for some reason I'm not a big fan of neons, which is why I said micro rasbora. If you do go with neocaridina then you have a choice of red cherry, yellow, orange, blue or white (just dont mix them) so explore the look you like - you tube or members aquariums section on here is recommended to get a great idea what you can achieve.
