The trusty ol' turkey baster is a good shout you can be quite specific with your clean up and it's effective when your tank is on the smaller side. I've got 240l to content with and a bit of a jungle to waft through, so the power head can create some decent water movement in and around the plants to lift stuff up. Before the plants took over I just used to wave my hand above the gravel while doing a water change and that was good enough to pick up the mess

@Country joe If the person in the video has tank water very different from his tap water, then yes water changes can harm the fish. This would apply to anyone who alters the water in the tank to suit the fish, and the answer is to prepare the new water outside the tank so that it's the same as the tank water.
For those of us who don't do anything to change the water, water changes, if done regularly, won't harm the fish as regular water changes keep the tank water similar to our tap water. It's when water changes are not done for a long time that the tank water chemistry drifts away from tap water ("old tank syndrome") and then when a water change is done the new water is different from the tank and can harm the fish.

And there's a way around this. If a tank has gone a long time without a water change, then acclimate with a series of small changes first. Like 10%. Then bump it up a little.

Gas pocket build ups are real.

I occasionally vacuum. Once or twice a year. But I have planted tanks and like the mulm to work its way in to the roots. If you aren't overfeeding, mulm build up is minimal anyway.
