You fish are starting to make me think. My next tank will be discus but it will takes years till im ready for another tank. I always though of discus as the supper models of the fish world. pretty to look at but thats it.

Would you say there is more to these fish then just being pretty?

yes absolutely snowflake i deffinately would.

yes they are mostly about the looks but pople seem to forget that they are still large cichlids , and so share many of their traits. very shy to start but now they are settled , they come rushing to the front of the tank when i get in from work jusy like vinny used to , saying hello/begging for food etc. within a week i had them hand feeding and now they if i put my hand to the glass they all come over and start following it around. .. i can even put my hand in the tank now with no food in it and over they come looking for food and will even let me stroke them and swimm through my fingers etc.

they deffinately recognise their owners too ( or should that be who brings the food ) . example if they see me or my missus they will allk come to the front of the tank , anybody else they are not fussed .

i was wondering how big does the tank have to be to keep discus and how many do you need for them to be happy?

the generally accepted rule of thumb for stocking discus is 10g per fish , discus like to be kept in groups and really you want to be keeping at least 6 , you could theoreticaly just about get away with a 55g but imo bigger would be better. i have got my group of 6 in a 100g 4x2x2 , and personally i dont think id like to have them in anything smaller. at the moment they are all at least 4 inches with the biggest being closer to 6 . when well cared for these fish can potentilly reach 8 to 9 inches across altho usually they willl stay a bit smaller than that.

Ok thankyou, well i would hate to keep such a beautiful fish in a tank too small for it. in my lfs they have a tank that must be about 500 litres, full of about 10 discus and about 20 clown loaches, the discus being like 6 inches and the clowns about 3 inches. its an immence setup

i love lfs that have big display tanks they truly are a sight to behold. the place i got my cardinals from has some amazing display tanks. a huuuuuge reef tnk in the corner is really cool , but imo the most impressive one is the african cichlid diplay tank which which must be around 8 foot cubed full of huge rocks with some really impressive fish in it .
