ahh great stuff, converting your colleagues at least you have people to talk "fish" with.

i'd give it a good soak and add melafix (or any antibacterial med) for a few days just to be sure. if it's come from another tank you dont know what infestations the previous owner had. in theory though if it's been dry for a while anything clinging on will be dead anyway. just a thought to be safe.

Yeh gives us something other than work to talk about when we do site visits!

I have melafix, but what med would you recommend? I have most of the interpet range? It looks to be completely dry and all the algae is well and truly dead, but as you say best not to take the risk.

Sam do you mind me asking where you work, you mentioned site visits! I do site visits where I work and have also managed to get a few collegues into the hobby. Its great being able to chat about how the tanks are going etc as the mrs just gets borred of hearing it all the time!!

I work for the Environment agency

James

Yeh I know what you mean but then again there are some nice women on here (Fish killer, bloo, lljdma06, Squirrelbuddies (;), Jen) to name but five) :) and they understand the NEED for nice pieces of bogwood no matter what the cost!
Uhm yes quite I do  but felt quite ashamed about it when I was hunting down unusual mopani wood in Namibia in January. We were travelling in a group of 5 and there were a number of roadside stalls selling wood (literally in the middle of nowhere) - and I made us stop at each and every one  just in case that "special" piece of wood is there !

Well I found three really stunning pieces (they are small works of art in my eyes!) but they need a bit of cleaning up and possibly a bit of sandblasting. And then of course had to lug the wood in my hand luggage and got no sympathy complaining about the weight of it !

When I get round to cleaning it up, I'll post some pics.

Haha thats fine work there Bloo, I would have done the same ;)

Yeh some pics would be cool, seems like Im not the only one who gets overly excited about bogwood! Anyone else what to post some pics of their pieces?

I work for a ecological consultancy in Oxford, called Bioscan, you may have heard of by bosses Charlie Gibson and/or Dominic Woodfield? We work with/consult the EA quite a bit.

Its a small world :)

my big £50 lump that went in the cube tank (about 2 foot long, 1 foot tall) complete with bird poop for that natural feel lol.

Oh yeh I remember now, that was a hell of a piece of wood!

and believe it or not that was one of the smaller pieces in Wildwoods at the time. there were lumps retailing at £150/200 beautiful but a little large. i couldn't even lift some of them.

Haha they must have seen some of amano's tanks and thought 'yeh people in the UK will want to try a 15'x6'x6' tank, and we'll provide the wood!'

Not being able to lift them does seem a bit limiting TBH!

Not yet, as I said will take me a while to get everything else I need for the tank overhaul, including a new tank! So probably be a month or so. Will be sure to start a journal when I do so you can see pics in the tank then :)

*cough* I've been outed!!!!

Mmyeah, I've had my bogwood hunting days. Unfortunately the ones I like would not fit my tiny tank, and the few bogwood tiny enough to fit in doesn't look like a "tree trunk" (you know...for my "tree" project). Ironic, huh? I can't find a tree trunk (bogwood) that looks like a tree trunk. Oi vey.

 Thought this had already slipped out? Woops! Nice cryptic name thou ;)
