Hi am new here and after some advice, Ive recently brought a 50 gall tank and have covered the back, what are the pros and cons of covering the ends? Part of me thinks it will give the fish a greater feeling of security but another just thinks it will make the fish harder to see, if you can help thanks.

I like the ends open. Its definately fun to look in from the sides sometimes and sometimes you need to see what your doing from there during maintenance.

I think your right, Im swinging towards leaving it open, also I've put various pipes and things in the tank so there are plenty of places to hide in.

I agree about laving them open. I tried covering them once and ended up cutting it off. If you have plants and a decent amount of decor and any fish or inverts that hide a lot like shrimp or kuhli loaches, sometimes the only way to see them is to look in from the end of the tank and along the back glass.

I have 3D sculptured backgrounds inside all my tanks. When the panels are cut to fit there is usually a chunk left over and as it costs an arm and a leg it would be a shame to waste it. I therefore come around the ends (usually about halfway) and it gives a sort of cave feel to it.

Does it for me :hey:

*edit* spelling AGAIN godamit!

I agree with all of the above.

I just set up a 29 gallon tank yesterday and i covered only the back...I like the sides open.

Keep the sides open, thats my opinion, better for viewing your fish, and looking into the the tank when you re-arrange your tanks decor.

I know this is slightly off topic but here goes anyway.

What do people think is the best as far as back cover for tanks?
I like the 3d sculpted ones that go inside the tank but i don't know if i will get it to fit mine.

I just put a black background on my tank...which goes along with my black sand, and also compliments my Cichlids. It brings out their color to the max!

 aH, we've been in sync today! I also have a totally solid flat black back wall on Oliver's tank and black gravel! ...makes the bright green plants and beautiful fish stand out!

LOL

Unfortunately I don't have any live plants...yet that is! :shifty:

But as far as the fish go...my Cichlids look absolutely amazing...the black on black REALLY compliments their colors!

to be honest, i like doresys idea, although i havnt tried it, it would be nice to cover just a little in order to create a cave effect- but my tanks at the end of my bed so i wont be looking at the sides
