try aquarists classifieds, or usually LFS have small ones in ( ive had an oscar that was under3 inches) if you can get hold of a breeder you can usually buy cheaply in bulk ( i wish) as oscars produce lots and lots of fry and they are quite hard to move on as they get so big.
Or look for someone selling stunted Oscars they are very common in batches of Fry
People don't like them because they don't live as long and can get health problems etc...but hey nomore than the always stunted EBJD...who have far more problems!...and its much more humane than culling them!
(When i say stunted i dont mean the type that have been squashed into small tanks to the point where there ody stops growing but there insides continue...i'm talking short body fry)
oscars can be touched, stroked and played with/hand fed ... but you will have to be carefull as theres always a chance they will turn, and they do draw blood
also its not really a good idea as it removed the slime coat.. but i have done it.. but if you start when they are young they get used to it ( if you can catch them to touch them that is.. they never seem to stop when theyre small)
Have seen 2" ones at LFS for £3.50 - £5.00 , shame they get so big 'cos the're lovely fish, did see one very very large Oscar in a very very small tank, looked like a 242 10 gallon, Oscar looking not to happy
Fish are in LFS for short time spans so are not kept in ideal conditions, many BIG fish are in small tanks just because they have been brought in by customers who no longer want them and the LFS has to put them somewhere to sell them on.
Yes they do and they can (and do) draw blood if they catch you, although this is usually only when hand feeding as they arent prone to attack your hand just for fun, but usually when your holding food over the top of the tank and you dont put it in quick enough, they jump *boo*. Not overly painful, but more of a shock
