naas, kildare, ireland, the best place on earth!!
Well, I have just seen my two bettas, spawning for the first time!! there was lots of eggs, and I was wondering if you could answer some of my questions:
1.to feed the fry, do you think I should trust Liquifry? (I have heard of a breeder who was very successful with it)
2. I cant get brine shrimp anywhere in Ireland, but do you think that Ocean Nutrition's "Instant Baby Brine shrimp" is ok?
3.My male is superglued to his nest at the moment, but I heard that you could spawn him with another female during this time, is this true?  :S

female needs to come out NOW or he will kill her.

the fry will need micro worm or vinegar eels for the first 2 weeks, then live brine shrimp for the next 2 months.

are you keeping your male with your female?
they should never be kept together long-term

ive raised all my fry on liquifry No1 with no problems at all, then microworms after 2 weeks and ever so often BBS.
You need to add the liquifry to the tank as soon as the eggs are laid, this gives it enough time to become active in the tank, dont put in to much though and read the instructions first.
different people do things different ways so do your best with the liquifry you have now, i promise you that all will be ok if you feed them twice a day. you may have to do 1 x 10% water change at the end of the first week but try to avoid it if its really not neccessary, if the base of the tank is really dirty then you need to do one after the first week, the best way is to syphon out some water into a clear tub and then look carefully for any fry you have collect by mistake, scoop them up and put them back in the tank, they will be ok. I get some fish bags and then fill them with water that has been treated and tie a knot in them then leave them to float in the tank to get to the same temp, try to make it the same temp as you can before adding it to the bags, leave for 30 mins then pierce the bags with small holes and leave them to drain on their own, this is a great way of doing water changes on very fragile fry.

good luck

what kind of tail types are your new fry gunna be and do you have any pics of the parents?, only b/c im interested. :good:

with no BBS, it will be hard to get a good survival rate.
its possible to feed liquafry for 2 weeks then go to finely powdered flake food, or powder fry food.

do you have the tank space and supplies for up to 100+ bettas?

you will need a 10g or 20g grow out tank for the females,
jars for all the males, (1 jar per male),
and another tank to put the dad in, as he will eat the fry as soon as they become free swimming.

the fin type is crowntail  !! I was in my local petshop today, looking for something decent to feed them, and then in the freezer, I saw a packet of frozen baby brine shrimp :hyper: !! Thank you for all the luck you wished me!! I have one little question, though, I checked the tank this morning, to see if there was fry yet, and there wasent  ! The betta didnt have a nest when he was spawning, so he just spat up some bubbles with the eggs  . Now that he has built a proper nest, I cant see the eggs anywhere  !!!!!!!this is what they look like........

Gorgeous pair you've got there!

Fry start to hatch about 24 hours after spawning, so you should notice some soon tonight. :good:
They might not go for the frozen brine shrimp, its not moving - and its instinct for them to go for moving food.
Mine are coming up for 4 weeks and won't touch the live BBS, they still love the Microworms and also eat finely crushed flake as well.

You could also try crushed boiled egg yolk, but you really need to watch how much is added to the tank because the water becomes polluted very easily this way. I had to do this at the start due to my culture failing to start with, just stick some boiled egg yolk in one of those spraying bottles with some water and mix it, then spray it over the surface of the water. About 2-3 schooshes per feeding.

Actually....... I had a bit of a disaster................... For some reason, my male shook the eggs out of his nest :-( ............ He still thinks he has them all..... he only has about five left :-( They havent hatched yet, and the temp. is really high :-(
I was wondering, if I put the female back in now (she has been scoffing bloodworm and taking chunks out of prawns for two days, and is prominent again), will she mate with the male? do you think I should give up on five eggs, or try another time? :S

No don't put the female back in the tank. :shout:

Before attempting to breed them again wouldn't it be better to get all the stuff ready for the future babies rather than panicking like you are doing.

Hate to sound short, but you have thrown two betta's together without making any attempt to check what you need for future babies nor do you know the simple basics of spawning a pair.

I have never heard of a male attempting to spawn with another female whilst still looking after his nest of potential offspring, he is more likely to kill her.

PLease, please read up on the subject and prepare before attempting to breed this pair again, they look lovely and I'm sure you don't want them to kill each other.

im shortly going to attempt breeding my pair after a realy big mistake i made by not reading up on them i put the male and female together strait awaay without getting the female in condition. she is in a quarantine tank now and is looking great. fins are still a bit torn but apart from that. i have read that you can feed them vinegar eels and i have never heared of them before. do you buy them live or frozen. i like the idea of spraying boiled egg yolk on the surface i might try that.
my female is starting to become plump but im going to give her another few days.
the male might have shook the eggs out of the nest because he might have felt threatened. when the eggs are in the nest you are meant to put a towel over the tank and just calmly check up on them every few hours.
well hope this helps. also what is the perfect temprature i should keep my tank for breeding. i currently have it on 82.F. is this OK
thanks once again

yeah, I wont try them  . I have read up on the subject for a year and a half (the half was when I was trying to breed and get breeding stock) :good: . I am still doing research  . The spawn was a little bit unexpected, so I couldnt really get all the stuff I needed  . Actually, the day they spawned was a day before I was going to go to the petshop to get all the stuff     . Anyway, they'll prob mate again........... :good:

PS: of course I dont want them to kill eachother!! :shout:
