At the moment in my breeding tank, I have the temp. set at 82F (It was at this temp. when they mated.)They sell live vinegar eels off www.petfishstore.com, there is advice on culturing them there, too. They are not sold frozen.I hope this helps!! :good: !At the moment in my breeding tank, I have the temp. set at 82F (It was at this temp. when they mated.)They sell live vinegar eels off www.petfishstore.com, there is advice on culturing them there, too. i have read that you can feed them vinegar eels and i have never heared of them before. do you buy them live or frozen. i like the idea of spraying boiled egg yolk on the surface i might try that.

Vinegar eels are great for small fry, but you have to be careful to really rinse the vinegar off them when you strain them otherwise your PH will change.

Breeding temp is usually around 80f and as you say a nice dim atmosphere is good for the spawning pair and away from constand movement and traffic in the house.

Hi bettalover97, how can the spawning be a surprise, you must have had the pair in the tank which presumably means you were planning to spawn them, was she in a cup and jumped out or just in the tank.
If you were introducing them then put her in a plastic semi transparent cup and float it in the tank or provide a partition so that they can't get together but can view each other.

This will encourage him to build a nest and help her in egg production.
BUT PLEASE GIVE HER AND HIM A CHANCE TO REST AND RECOUP BECAUSE IT IS VERY ENERGY CONSUMING AND THE FISH END UP EXHAUSTED, which is why you have to prep them for a few weeks before even attempting to spawn them, they have to build up a store of energy.

well, I wasent expecting them to mate this quick :hyper: !! I have been trying for ages, and if the fish even attempted to mate,it would take at least two weeks  !! I have the pair resting in warm jars of water, and I am feeding them bloodworm and frozen brine shrimp :good:!!!!!!!

yeah, I wont try them  . I have read up on the subject for a year and a half (the half was when I was trying to breed and get breeding stock) :good: . I am still doing research  . The spawn was a little bit unexpected, so I couldnt really get all the stuff I needed  . Actually, the day they spawned was a day before I was going to go to the petshop to get all the stuff     . Anyway, they'll prob mate again........... :good:

PS: of course I dont want them to kill eachother!! :shout:

how the heck could the spawn be unexpected??? you only put them together when your ready.
