So... Last night my boyfriend and I put one of our gorgeous female bettas into the divided 10 gal with one of our GORGEOUS veil tails.
she was in a small jar when we introduced her to him.
By this morning there was a HUGE nest of bubbles.
I let her out of the cup a couple of hours ago.
Now I have a nest full of eggs!!

What should I do next?

My dad is usualy the one that breeds the bettas.
And I'm a complete noob at this.

Help?

I'll post pics of the mother and father.

take her out now, leave him with the eggs for upto 3 days until the fry are swimming on their own, leave the tank light on for 3 days 24/7 so he can see what he is doing.

exactly as modaz said , take the female out, and leave him with the fry for 3 days - DO NOT FEED HIM!!! he could mistake fry for food!!!, leave the light on for 3 days constantly so that he can see if any fry fall then he can put them back. as soon as the fry are free swimming take the male out.

Have you got any microworms yet??

good luck . i just had my first spawn 2 weeks ago now and as far as i can see ive still got around 70 fry. but they are tiny when they first hatch.

There is lots of info on breeding and raising fry on our website which might be helpful.

I was wondering why you have bred though, as only a couple of weeks ago you were struggling to accomodate all the Bettas that you had :/

Also it sounds like you have spawned in a divided tank. To breed Bettas they really need to have been spawned in a separate tank with only about 6" of water. How have you got this tank set up and what size are the divided sections and how many of them?

Well at the time I was just freaking out cause I didn't know what in the world was just going on with my bettas cause they had that white stuff around their lips.
But after about two hours in the tank it went away and everything has just been awesome since then.
I thought it would be a nice surprise for my dad on his birthday by May.
And I was just curious on how it all worked out.
I know I'm not breeding them the way that is deemed as "Correct" but right tnow I'm doing the best I can.
And hopefully by monday I'll have another ten gallon aquarium divided into three parts into four. So I can use the one I currently have for the babies.

And all of this already happened so I can't do anything about it now.

Also... Each betta has appx. 2.5 gallons to swim around in. I'm tight on space and money. And the ten gal has a light, whisper filter, and a nice heater to keep the water at 78 F.

I took the female out as soon as she was depleated of eggs.
And I'm gonna run up to my dad's today and get some microworms.
He is an avid breeder- surprisingly that I barely know anything about betta breeding.
Haha.

How long have you had these fish, it doesnt sound like very long, they really need to be conditioned before breeding to be in proper shape.

Also if you can't do something the correct way you really shouldn't do it at all...

Do you have individual containers for all of the fry to be seperated into when the time comes? That means anywhere from a couple to 100 containers could be needed. 10 gallons really isnt enough to grow out babies unless you have a small spawn.

And if you're tight on money and space, why are you breeding? It takes nothing but lots of money time and space. What will you do with all of the babies once they grow up? Clearly you dont have the space to keep them.

And you need a sponge filter in the breeding tank a whisper filter with suck the babies right up and disturb the bubblenest. The water temp should be 82-85 F.

I've had ALL OF MY BETTAS for at least 6 or 7 months.
and she was conditioned to HIM for about two days.
There's was no fin nipping. well on here there's a little tear but not bad at all.

I can get plenty of small containers for free- I work at petco.

I have figure that out all already, thank you very much. My parents will be out of th ecountry for a couple of months and I will be staying there for a couple of months starting the end of december.

The house is super warm- and my dad has a few sponge filters that I can take along with 3 free 10 gallon aquariums.

And the whisper filter is on the other side of the aquarium. I turned up the heater to where it's 81-84F

I may be an amateur but my dad isn't.

conditioned to him?

when most people mean conditioning they mean very clean tank water and very fresh healthy foods for at least two weeks. other wise the female will have little to no eggs and the male will be extreamly agressive to her.

Sorry to be negative but it sounds like a recipe for disaster. If you've spawned them in the divided tank that you put pictures up of then it's totally unsuitable and any fry you do get will be able to get through the dividers and get themselves eaten by the other males.

If you want to surprise your Dad then do it properly and research well and have everything you need in advance.

People are more than happy to help with advice but not if it's going to be ignored!!!

Spawning in a divided tank you're not going to get any fry, so you've unnecessarily stressed out both parents by having them breed in an unsuitable environment. And what do you plan on doing with the fry? They're veiltails so they're probably going to end up rotting on the shelves of a local lfs.

Edit: Post #100 yay! :kana: I feel accomplished ive never reached this many posts on a forum before!

And I am taking everyone's advice to the fullest I can take it.
There's a difference between trying to help someone and being absolutely rude.

When that was mentioned I made a decision to take the whisper filter out and the dividers out. Along with a majority of the decor.
I moved my male bettas to their old tanks until I get to my dad's.

And I just put in a mature sponge filter from my dad's cichild tank.In a way I do regret doing this. At least I learned a little more from this.
But I intend to take full responsibility and whatever it takes to keep most of the fry alive

I don't plan on being irresponsible and I really appreciate it WHEN there are avid betta enthusiasts that do nothing but bash on inexperienced people.
how can you be experienced without any experience?

I feed my bettas blood worms, decapsulated brine shrimp, and a variety of betta pellets and flakes.
WITh a 25% water change every week.

Anything I'm missing?

Well I don't think I was being "absolutely rude" or "bashing you". But it is very frustrating when people rush into breeding having done little or no research and haven't even got the basic set up right!!!!! My concerns are for the Bettas and the fry and I will always try to help people if I can.

As to conditioning.....this is from our website and there is alot more info on there which talks you through each stage of spawning and raising babies and the equipment you'll need.

Conditioning

Firstly you will need to condition your male and female separately for at least 2 weeks. The male can be conditioned in the spawning tank so he can establish his territory before the female is added. The temperature should be between 28-30c. You can feed Betta Pro, frozen or live bloodworm, glassworm or tubifex. These will need to be fed 3 times a day as much as they will eat.

It's very important that both male and female are in the best condition possible before breeding them.

Well I wasn't necessarily talking about you.

And my bettas were breeding fine.
Like I mentioned earlier; minimal sparring and both made it through alive.
I have the female in a 3 gallon eclipse right now- I just haven't turned on the filter yet.
I'll do that tonight.

Please understand that I do love all my bettas VERY MUCH.
I've seen them withered away to nothing- then I put all my time, money, and effort to allow them to live as comfortably as possible.

And with the betta fry- I don't plan on selling any of them.
If I have too many- I'll probably just give them to friends and family.

I don't think anyone on here is trying to be mean, but we just see way too many people trying to breed bettas who haven't done the research. On this part of the forum we are bery attached to our fish and would never do anything to compromise their health or happiness. so we do come across as a bit militant sometimes! I'm glad you are taking the advice on board - you may not have started out the best way but you are trying to m ake thngs right. If you do lose your fry then at least you have loads of good advice to help you next time. And I'm sure your dad will be very impressed when he sees your babies in a few months time!

And I do understand that.
And probably I'll get to that point ONE day.
I'm very attatched to my bettas too. I didn't go to work for two days when my betta of 4 years passed away.
I have about 15 fry stiill alive, the other half died or got eaten by papa.
I took the dad out and began to take the rest of the decorations out.
I also started feeding them today.
microworms.

If I ever breed bettas again- my next spawn will be my delta tail pair
Or my crowntails.
