Authentic Betta Bowl

i'll agree that it looks bad, but that doesn't mean it IS bad. Cracker can grow bettas in anything, a disconnected toilet, a bathtub, a trashcan. The truth of the matter is that we're so obsessed over here in the states with cleanliness that we're doing more harm than good both to our fish who, having never been exposed to anything, can never fight off anything, and to ourelves. This anti-bacterial crusade is causing people to have more allergies and immune system deficiencies than ever before.

Cracker is unconventional by our standards, but if anything WE should be taking tips off of HIM. He is probably the most prolific, and most successful breeder on this forum.

SoCalMom has a point though. They bowl looks fairly dirty, but seriously....can you really tell from a picture? It is not for us to judge Cracker's "betta skills" through how he raises his fry. If using a toliet bowl is what he does, and his fry turn out happy and healthy....that's all that really matters! ^_^ Cracker's probably a pro at this, so he knows what he's doing.....I would probably never put them in a toliet bowl because of filth and waste (OUR waste) but that's just me. It's totally up to you on how you raise your fish.

Yep the bowl looks dirty because it's rainy season here those dirt came from the roof lol the brown like thingy in the water is actually dead water lettuce roots which makes the water conditioned.

The toilet was a wedding gift to my friend and they never used it since they already have a house with toilet bowl of course ha ha. So he gave it to me and converted it into something useful, in fact I used to raise Annubias Berteri plant in this bowl til I realized that I want to try raising bettas and it's working.

Bettas are definitely healthy and happy.

this has got to be 1 of the funniest conversations on a forum ever nice 1 cracker :good:

You know sometimes we need to laugh because we are all working so hard and laughter is the only medicine :hyper:

Dan-25 is right, I believe. SoCalMom doesn't know Cracker. She doesn't know what a pro he is. I wouldn't throw bettas in a toilet but Cracker can because he knows what he's doing. Hell, he could probably fill up an old dumpster with water and raise show grade bettas in it. He's just got the touch when it comes to bettas.

I'm no pro, I'm just a simple small time betta breeder who keeps on experimenting and learning new things from other breeders and hobbyist just like you.

Thanks a lot for your trust and understanding .... I do agree with you (I hope other's wont get offended) but the reality is our fish sometimes needs dirty water and environment to make them more tougher and active and live longer.

In fact most and famous breeders in Asia doesn't clean their tanks and don't change the water so often but their fishes are jaw dropping. I hope some of our friends/forumers here will be more open and accept the reality.

See how some of my betta tanks are so dirty lol

yep ive seen crackers betta and they do look good and healthy and he defo knows his stuff but at the same time i do see the other side of it, i wouldnt dream of putting any fish in anything like that, as yes it does look grubby and unhealthy environment but again bettas live in ponds and such in some parts of the world and we all know how hard it is to keep a pond or lake clean lol. its comes down to us used to having clean and well presented tanks in our homes and this is how we have always known it to be, so i see where the negative side of it is being stemed from but also do agree that if it holds water then its a tank.

so to be honest i vote for both sides :hyper: goodness knows what im gunna do when it comes to voting in the next election lolololol

Don't worry we do have a house in South San Francisco you can visit my bettas there anytime and I can give you as many as you want for free :good:

wow is that deal open to everyone ;) :D

come to my country my dear and get whatever you want for free .....

provided that you help me clean my tanks ha ha

you know betta breeding or selling is not my main job, it's just a hobby for me yand es I do sell some of them but this is just to get few bucks in maintaining their food, electricity, water bill and salary for my occassional worker but of course ... just come over and you'll get your prize or find me a wife there and I'll send your freebies :fun:

Sorry, just had to say a few more things

I don't have to know this guy to be turned off by the conditions of that toilet/alley, k?

I don't care if he is God's gift to bettas. The conditions are atrocious

I can't believe everyone thinks it's ok that this guy is keeping them in such dirty quarters. Yea...you're right; the natural environment wild bettas comes from isn't clean. These are captive bettas. We can control their environment

And yes, Cracker. Those tanks do look dirty

And sorry; that toilet bowl isn't just dirty from it raining...that's old caked on grunge

I'm in no way a germ/clean freak. Heck, I'm pretty messy myself...but that's just over the top. Would you want to sit on that toilet or in that alley way? I seriously doubt it. So why should they have to live there?

I'm also not judging his "betta skills". I'm judging the conditions they are kept in.

Everyone jumped on Bettagirls butt for keeping her fish in 1/4 gallon bowls; yet no one cares this guy is keeping them in filthy quarters. Amusing in a hypocritical way dont you think?

Now I'm done. Everyone knows my opinion on the matter. There's no point in beating a dead horse :)

Needs a "Don't flush" sign, Cracker. You don't want $100 in merchandise to go down the drain, do you? Make sure nobody in your family eats spicy food. We don't want any emergency visits.

Doesn't anybody think that it is just slightly odd that there is a toilet in the middle of an alley? I mean, besides the bettas in the toilet thing, there's a toilet in the middle of an alley. Talk about "Outhouse". Well, when ya gotta go, ya gotta go. I have a hard time taking this seriously, people.

That being said, I know Cracker and I know what he does, but I do think SoCalMom has a point. People are being a tad hypocritical, especially when we constantly complain about bettas being kept in gumball machines, picture frames, vases, toilet tanks, sink tanks, etc...Geez, what other types of containers have we seen? I think I've seen them all. I think it also brings the point that perhaps maybe it is the care the fish receives rather than the packaging it's kept in. I've seen bettas in seemingly ideal 5g tanks suffering from disease from dirty water and I've seen bettas in 1/2g unfiltered, unheated bowls thrive and build bubble nests because their water is changed every 2 days. It's all about the care.

llj :)

My first thought was EW!! You keep fish in there? I hope not. But then the more I looked at the pictures, I was like hey whatever works for ya. Just as long as you don't flush it. Else that would get interesting...haha :fun:

You know what would be great? A stranger walking by with a look on his face thinking "what the heck is a toilet doing in this alley?" and then him looking even closer to see fish swimming in it HAHAHA.

Well Cracker, you threw me there! I did think it was a joke but it immediately came to mind "OH, it's Cracker..he knows what he's doing". Yes, you are totally insane but you have some AMAZING fish!!! I want a toilet betta! :hyper:

I must say, hats off to you cracker. Not many would have the 'guts' to come to a forum such as this and post pictures and vids like you do.

I must agree though, some people (no Im not implying anyone in particular before we get onto some random flame war :p) are very strict on what they believe is acceptable. Although I will give out very precise advice to new people to the hobby, I dont follow some of that advice myself. I never test my water stats. I haven't always used stresscoat and stresszyme. I sometimes don't feed my fish for two days. My main tanks (not the ones I keep my Bettas in, I might add) sometimes don't get a water change for two months. I haven't and still don't use the 1" of fish per gallon rule. And many other things that alot of people in general will turn their nose up at. However every single fish of mine is happy and healthy. The new Betta I got on the weekend split her tail on her first night with us, however it is nearly fully healed in two days without any meds or special treament, this I put down to good water and health of the tank. My bfs grandfather kept and bred fish for about 20 years, in that time he never conditioned water or fish. Water was run straight from the garden tap straight into the tanks through a hose, he never had one death due to poor water, or care, just old age or something nasty the fish had when it was bought.

It's ok to let our hair down when it comes to our fish. Of course the well being of our fish and indeed any animal/pet is the most important thing to us all, but sometimes we do need a reality check.

And this is a great reality check from cracker.

:good:

hey crackerbettas~
That is class but i do have to agree it needs a do not flush sign
btw when are you coming to the stateside CB?

i must also admit i am the same Maddie, but seeing Crackers bettas just proves the care they gett, there tanks may not look the best but you can see there happy and healthy :good:

Its not a freaking alley, you can clearly see a window in the last pic. He lives in manila, this is probably the nicest looking house there! common the fish look fine to me!
