well so my mum calls me down from my sleep in the middle of the night and said you fish are doin stuff to each other and I turned the light on what the hell!!!!! the parrot tryed to lock jaws but obviously the aro cant so they kinda just circled each other and then they stopped so went back to bed then today the parrot cichlid was guarding a dug out hole and iam trying to find eggs but he/she keeps oin getting in the way while the aro just swims near this truly is the weirdest combo lol I'll keep you guys updated

those babies will look straaange :S

Uh, is this even possible. Sure, south americans (a parrot cichlid is a cross between two south americans, right?) can breed with in the same genus, but an arawana is not even a cichlid! I don't think those egss would be fertile.

As pica nuttali said, not a chance of successful breeding; these fish are only distantly related, and it would be like trying to breed a bat with a wolf.

I'd be more worried about the outcome of this interspecific aggression. Arowanas need proper care, and I wouldn't want to risk having a large, expensive fish hammered by some neurotic cichlid.

Cheers,

Neale

i dont really believe it, but it would be fertile anyway.

most blood parrot males are sterile. :(

With love, anything is possible

well there was 1 egg but the parrot cichlid ate it and boy was the aro mad nearly tore him apart had to separate them  doesnt really matter that that they ate the egg I wouldnt of wanted to raise that kind of baby do you know how much it would eat lol

As many of us had said before:
The egg would not hatch! Sorry to be rude, but it is true.

Yeah OA I think thats quite rude, willtang never tried crossing them on purpose it just kinda happened and he posted as much for our amusment I think as anything else, then you but in and say i hate to be rude but I told ya so

Ok then, but now I'm confused, if you didn't want it to be fertile, why'd you say I'll keep you updated? :/ Seriously, I'm confused badly today.

I think the whole behaviour thing is all very interesting. BUT - it simply would NOT happen. Arowanas and parrot cichlids (or any cichlid for that matter) CANNOT breed. Nothing can change that. Period. They may try to, they may behave like they are going to, the female may even lay eggs like yours did - but it won't hatch because it would NOT be fertile. Not ever. I'm pretty sure this is what opositearmor was trying to get across because a lot of people were implying it could work if the egg had not been eaten - it couldn't - and raising the fry wouldn't be an issue - because there would be no fry (even if the egg was not eaten) as the egg would be infertile. Arowana and cichlid DNA simply isn't compatible - even if their behaviours somehow manage to be and they were to actualy spawn, you'd never, ever get fry. Anyway, thanks willtang for describing the behaviour. I think this is what the updates were going to be on BTW. It is very interesting to see 2 entirely different species somehow finding a way to 'breed' in the absence of their own kind lol. Someone said 'hope springs eternal' - I'll second that ;)
