Hi

I went to a LFS yesterday and they had three Arius Sagor. It said that they are similar to Columbian Cat Sharks but are very rare.
I waited for ages to ask somebody but they were so busy in there.
What I would like to know is, would they peacefully mix with my Columbian Cat Sharks and do they eventually need the same salinity then Columbian Cat Sharks. Mine are at about 1.015.
My plan was to grow them on in my low end 1.005 tank and when they have reached about 6-7 inch to transfer to my big tank.

Thanks

Sabby

Can't be 100% sure, but Ariidae generally are usually peaceful with species of all types too big to be eaten. Arius sagor requires essentially identical maintenance to Sciades seemani, so in terms of care you shouldn't have problems mixing them. They're brackish/marine rather than freshwater/brackish catfish, so SG 1.010 upwards would be the ideal.

I'd be tempted to try mixing them immediately with the adult Sciades you have now; usually I find Colombian sharks are neither aggressive nor predatory towards juveniles, and this might be a good way to introduce them without territorial or hierarchical squabbles.

Cheers, Neale

Thanks for your advice.

I would be a bit worried putting them in my big tank. My biggest Cat Shark is about 15/16 inch. I even had to rearrange my tank completely as at feeding time they have managed to knock a BIG piece of slate off. The only one brave enough to mix with my Cat Sharks at feeding time is my GSP. The other Sharks are only about 3/4 inch. I would worry they get hurt. I was going to grow them on a bit first in 1.005. Do you think that would be to low? By the end of the year or early next year we are planning on an 8 ft tank, so I was going to wait until then and introduce the new Cats to the others then. All being new territory for everybody.
The LFS ( A very well known Shop) who has the Arius Sagor gives no mention that they have to be Brackish. All it is saying that they are a rare fish and similar to the Columbian Cat Shark. I was a bit suprised.

Thanks again

Hi Sabby --

Can't speak for what the LFS guy is saying; often they're simply recounting what the wholesaler told them. In any case, here's the stats on this species:
