All rainbowfish are easy to breed. Have a male and female and put them in a tank with some plants. Feed them well and wait. They will often lay eggs each day for many months, producing thousands of eggs. The eggs can be transferred to a hatching tank and the fry fed on infusoria, green water, and various liquid and powdered fry foods. Once the fry are a week or so old you can feed them on newly hatched brineshrimp.

The following link has heaps of info and pics on rainbowfish

wow thanks for the info. i am thinkng on gettin just a few for a 20 gal tank i have set up.
any more info wecome

Only keep one species per tank if you want to breed them because they will cross breed with each other and produce unwanted hybrids. However, if you don't want to breed them, you can mix different species in the same tank.
Make sure they have plenty of vegetable/ plant matter in their diet.
Keep the gravel and filters clean and do regular water changes.
Make sure any new water is free of chlorine and don't over dose with medications. Rainbows are sensitive to chemicals.
Try to keep the PH close to neutral (7.0) or slightly alkaline (7.0-7.8). In acid water or water with a lot of nutrients (high nitrates) the fish will become nervous and skittish and can die from shock.
New rainbows often damage the tips of their nose/mouth. It will get a little white bump on it but it is not a problem and will heal up by itself.
Most rainbowfish problems are caused by poor water quality, dirty filters & lack of plant matter in their diet.

As Colin says...
New rainbows often damage the tips of their nose/mouth. It will get a little white bump on it but it is not a problem and will heal up by itself.
Fairly common occurance.
Lift the pH slightly to 7.5 - 7.8 with moderatly hard water and a little cooking salt this will soon clear that up.

Mine Bred very easily without me even knowing it. I found some eggs attatched to some plants a week after I took them out of my tank. I was not able to have any of the fry survive though...
