Aquarium Salt?

Just wondering if I should be adding aquarium salt to my fresh water tank? I have a 55 gal with cichlids and a 16 gal with dwarf puffers. So far I've never added it, but I keep reading that it promotes good health. If yes, how much? Thanks!

Whilst I always keep some aquarium salt, I don't add it routinely - only as treatment when appropriate.

I use it only as treatment for diseases.. there is a reason why freshwater fish don't live in the oceans I would not recommend using salt regularly except for brackish fish.
