Aquarium Salt

I was wondering if any of the more advanced fish hobbyists out there actually add aquarium salt to freshwater tank.

I have a carton of aquarium salt that I bought API brand.

on the box it says:

Freshwater fish actively maintain a natural balance of electrolytes in their body fluids. electrolytes such as potassium sodium, chloride, calcium and magnesium are removed from the water by chloride cells located in their gills. These electrolytes are essential for the uptake of oxygen and the release of carbon dioxide and ammonia or ammonium across gill membranes.

so this kind of makes me want to put the salt into my community tank to help with electrolytes ect...However I've seen people on the web say it isn't necessary.

i use it. its good for if you have parasites or an infection and you need a bath of salt. i also use it regularly in my tanks. it gives the fish more slime and it lowers stress. i also use it for my brine shrimp hatchery. just don't overdose.... i assume you have and want a freshwater tank?

Salt is not needed in freshwater tanks. It could even be harmful to some fish.

no, the secret is in the term "fresh water". though it can be used as a medication, it is of no use, used regularly, in any freshwater tank.

if you require "brackish" you use Marine Salt.

the term "fishkeepers snake oil" was coined, here, and it fits the product perfectly. dont waste your money, however little!

I've never used salt in my aquariums,has mentioned it can do more harm than good especially has some species cant tolerate it,bottom dwellers like corys etc being one...

yeah, I believe its "scale-less fish", that suffer that reaction.

I do have two cody's and two clown loachs....it would harm them you you said?

yes salt would harm you cory and loach
