Api Test Kit

The api master test kit recommends using 8 drops per 5ml for the ammonia test and 5 drops per 5ml for the nitrite test.

Is there any reason why you can't lower the test sample (say 3ml) and lower the drop dosage accordingly.

The nitrite one would be straight forward, 1ml = 1drop
Ammonia would be slightly different though as 1ml = 1.6drops. So to get a closest to a whole "drop" you have to use 2ml (3.2drops) or 3ml (4.8drops).

Has anyone tried this before or is it me being a stingey northerner!!!

i think its you being tight.... just do what the test says and you know the results will be ok

Still going to test my theory out later simply for my own morbid curiosity!

You still get a LOT of tests out of those bottles using the regular dose. I have not tried a reduced ratio, though. You got me curious, and I just checked my logs: my ammonia bottles are just now starting to feel like they are almost empty, and I have done 95 ammonia tests. So it looks like you get about 100 tests out of them.
