I'm a petsitter and I fell in love with akitas when i walked my first (and only) one. He's an awesome dog and i've wanted a pit bull for a while but we can't really have pits in my apartment complex and I plan on moving in a year or 2 into a house. I figured i could get a good smart dog like an akita or yellow lab and she could help train the pit puppy (my friends with pits all had older dogs around them when they were puppies and they turned into perfect dogs). My question is: Have you introduced a new dog after the akita and was it the same sex? I've been reading that they don't get along with pets of the same sex and i really wanted females. I don't want a dog to mark everything like Angus (the male akita i walk) :S

I havent got an Akita but i have a friend who does. They have 2 Akitas and 3 Rotties 1 Akita and 1 Rottie are both male and get on great even when the bitches are in season but the Akita is terrible with Strange Male dogs .She told me when she first got the Akitas that they can be a very head strong breed and i know she did have problems training her dog as he would just do his own thing

I want an Akita.
The only thing is, I don't know how one would fare in Texas :/

If you get one, just buzz-clip him once or twice a year. That's what I would do when I had my golden retriever; he loved it. Good luck with your decision.

i'm in arizona  i plan on keeping him off the pavement as much as possible and only go on short walks for bathroom breaks when it's 110degrees+ outside

Well, that right there would ause you problems. Akitas are very active working dogs and MUST have lots of exercise! You would end up with a dog with lots of behavioural problems if he didn't have enough exercise.

I dont have an akita myself but know a few people who show them and they are lovely dogs but as has been said, can be very headstrong and hard to train and also if not socialised properly as a puppy you could have aggression problems. I'd advise speaking to breeders in your area and see what they say as they'd be the best people to advise you.

i've been looking at akita club websites and there are a few breeders around town i plan on talking to about the heat issue. I also talked to my boss and she said i could crate her (the puppy, not my boss :p ) in the office while i work. We have pet sitters coming in and out all day so I'm sure they'd all take a little time to play with her, we all really love animals. Trust me, i'll try to figure everything out before i even ever go look at a single puppy, i want to be prepared. I studied ish for 4 or 6 months before i started putting my saltwater tank together.
