Yesterday, I got some black sand to replace the gravel in my rio 125. I have 'sand coloured' sand in my other tanks, so I wanted a change. It isn't a branded sand, the shop sold it by the pound weight from a large tub. This morning I've started to wash it. It is a very different texture from the sand in my other tanks. It's much finer and sort of flows when it's wet; it's almost like dust.

So the question is, can sand be too fine for fish? I know my apsitos filter the sand in their tank through their gills, but will very fine sand do any damage to the fish in the rio? I have bolivian rams in this tank and I don't want them to end up swallowing it all through being too fine.

Or am I just worrying needlessly :/

I used Silica in my tank. Its basically just white sand and i used it for one year in a half and no fish ever had a problem with it. So your sand should be fine.
