My angel fish laid eggs. the tails are moving. It is 48 hours since they were laid. Do I remove the mother fish to prevent her from eating the eggs? When will they be free swimming?
THIS IS AN EMERGENCY. PLEASE RESPOND ASAP.
Thanks, Ellen

Ellen,

Sorry it's taken so long for some-one to get back to you.

You have a couple of choices:

If you have a spare cycled tank, heater etc / or a spare tank & can use some of the media from your current tank you can remove (hopefully) the stone / leaf / bit of wood with the eggs on it and put it in the spare tank with a small amount of methylene blue.
or
alternatively you can leave them in the tank and hope the parents take care of them. If this is one of the first times they have spawned unfortunately the parents will probably eat the eggs (they will think the other fish will if they don't). As time goes on and they spawn again they tend to become better parents.

Long term your best choice is to put the pair in their own tank (at least 20 gallons) and let them raise the eggs, or at least let them try several times.

And as for the second part of your question normally about 72hrs, once the fry become free swimming you can feed them newly hatched baby brine shrimp.

HTH & don't be too upset if the parents do eat the eggs, they will spawn again....

Good luck... :D
