My in-laws have a koi angel with a similar appearance to the gill plate. Has it always looked like this or is this a new development. I will look through my pictures and see if I can find a pic of their angel.

If it is not a new development, it could be just how this one is made. Or perhaps a defect that is common in this color morph?

The gill cover is a genetic deformity and is functional but not nice to look at. It is not a disease. Just don't use the fish for breeding purposes.
